I had the same problem when I was torque braking, my transmission would not go into Overdrive. I parked my car for a little while and then drove off with the transmission shifting normally and I did notice that the OD did flash 3 times before going off.
If you find yourself in need of maximum braking power in your automatic, push the stick forward from D to N. Don't use your thumb on the "release" button, just push the stick forward. You'll be surprised at how much that helps. The stick will not go into reverse . . . unless you are pushing the thumb switch as well.
I tend to do this on auto cars just to make the braking smoother, too.

I just pulled this code from the ECU as well. I was screwing around last night and stepped on it and hit ice and hit redline in my auto. I also pulled a "Front Right Heated O2 sensor" code at the exact same time... Any reason for the both at the same time?!?! Was it just too much, so fast for the O2?!?! I am shifting fine, and D1 and D2 work fine. Think I just put the tranny into a protection mode temporarily, or could this be something that could lock up the tranny?!?!? Anybody have horror stories to the point that I should bring it to a nissan dealership.
Thanks for any help you can offer!

I just pulled this code (0504) today. It turned on towards the end of my trip to NJ while I was still at a steady highway speed. When the light came on, I thought it was the rear heated O2 Sensor (0707) code that came on about a month before that turned it on again, which I also pulled as well today from the ECU.
No problems shifting, no failsafe, just the 0504 code with the 0707 code on top of it. Is there any concern or anything I should look for in the future regarding this code? I read all the above posts and there are no obvious symptoms. Look at my sig for mods if you need to know.
