Can I get an ECU code if my Check Engine Light isn't lit?

My car is seriously ******* it, and the symptoms lead me to any of several sensors. But I'm not getting a CEL! Anyone know whether I'd get a "No Fault" reading if I pull codes without my CEL on?

My guess is that you'll get a "no-fault" code since sensors need to trip the ECU in order to get a code.

You could always try it, but you'll probably get a "no-fault" code.

Yes you can get codes that don't register with the CEL. The knock sensor is one, and I believe an EGR code is another (whatever code 1405 is).

Chances are you won't get much help around here on ECU codes

Try checking the resistances of the front & rear O2 sensors and the KS.Check to see if the CEL bulb is not blown out.

Yeah, that was the plan. I have a voltmeter, but not much experience with it. Hopefully Haynes, FSM or the "How to Use Your Voltmeter" book I bought will help me out. I even bought a propane torch to try Daniel Martin's famous "burn off the deposits" rejuvenation technique. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for your help, guys. If anyone has more info I'm all ears.
