I'll stick w/ my 4th Gen SE

While I was at the dealer to do the BG Engine Flush, I decided to kill some time & since I know the salespeople there quite well, I asked if I could test drive an '02 SE and I did, the one I tested was the Majestic Blue (correct?), automatic, nearly the same features as mine (cloth, sunroof), but this one had the Bose system, and boy that thing can crank. Also got a chance to wind up the new 3.5L VQ, and boy this sucker is fast. However around 4300 rpm, I felt a somewhat jerky shift when the trans. shifted from 1st gear to 2nd, but it was smooth sailing from there. Yet somehow I had this eerie feeling that my SE (4th gen) felt like the better car. After testing that car, I wanted to test drive the '02 Altima 3.5SE, so I did. The Altima 3.5SE I tested was really nice, fully loaded, and equally fast, but you can hear the engine from a mile away from inside & it feels like the steering is a bit overly sensitive, plus the interior feels somewhat cheap compared to the Maxima interior. Again, the eerie feeling of liking my 4th Gen Max SE came back to me. So after driving both Altima and Maxima's w/ the new VQ, and both are really nice, I'd take another Maxima since the interior feels more richer than the '02 Altima 3.5SE, but there's nothing like my 4th Gen Max SE and I'm sticking w/ that since it already grew on me.

Keep the 98, I have a 2002Se and a 97SE and like the 97 more. It looks more sporty and I still get more compliments on it vs the 2002 SE.

Same thing happen to me couple weeks ago when I was at the dealership -- waiting for service and decide to take a '02 SE for a spin. Even though the '02 gave me a stronger pull when I press on the gas, I still like my '97 better.

I drove a Stage stationwagon with the VQ25DET (AWD) and I want one! However, it's nto available in the US so I love my 4th gen.

Agreed, 4th gen is my choice over the 5th gen & 2k2 Altima. Nothing wrong with the cars (they're all great cars), my styling preference simply sticks to the 4th gen.

Me too!

My 95SE is now 7 years old and people keep asking me why I don't buy a new car... Like you, test drove the 2002 Altima back in the fall (for freebie gift) and did not like it as much as my 4th gen, especially modded. Newer car may just be new and not substantially better. I love my 95!
