anyone have a 96' w/ over 160k miles?
hi guys, i'm about to make a purchase from my cousin... he's going to sell me his '96 SE which is fully loaded and kept it excellent condition... w/ intake, exhaust, suspension upgrades. It's an excellent and he's gonna give a good discount for the car. Only problem is that my parents are hesitant about it because it has 160k miles on it (90% freeway miles). They think the life of the car has been used up... blah blah... i just wanted to know if there would be any problems that ppl experience after goin over 150k miles on their car. thanks for the help guys

Price Question...
I was reading the "High Mileage" post and I noticed alot of people had to replace transmission, CV Joints, and rotors.... how much would this cost seperately?? thanks

A transmission rebuild would cost around $1600 from a dealer. I've also heard of starter problems with high miles. Thats only a $200 job though. My 96 has 67000 miles on it and I just had the clutch replaced. Only other problems that I know of (second owner) were the O2 sensors were replaced. I hope my original tranny lasts another 100k miles...

I have a 1996 5spd. I have replaced the tranny at 85k which cost $2100. Rotors and CV joints are also things which have been replaced. The rear rotors had problem of warping. RIght now its at 99k and runs strong.
I do race my car and have mods. <- most likely the reason for having to swap so many parts.

Transmissions
Only some transmissions were prone to the bearing failure. It was due to improper shimming at the factory. This was clearly explained on the www.motorvate.ca web site. If his tranny has gone 160K and has no leaks, chances are it was shimmed correctly and the bearings are just fine.
Sure there are issues with buying a car with 160K on it. Some items do ware out. Rotors are cheap, CV joints should be fine as long as the boots don't break open. Shocks and struts may or may not be getting weak. I had a Honda Perlude 170,000 miles - one brake job, a transmission because of a defective pin and many many many oil changes. Never really had a problem with the car. Sold it 3 years ago, the guy that baught it is still driving it with not a single problem.
A friend of mine had a Mazda MPV, 350,000 miles on it when it met it's maker. He never replaced anything on the drive trane. Just tune ups, oil changes, and brakes.
Don't be scared by high miles, check over the maintenance records and review the history of the vehicle. If it's been a reliable car for 160,000 miles, then it will probably run for quite a few more miles. Our VQ engines are very durable and the car itself it built to last.

I have a 95 GLE with almost 160k. Replaced the tranny at 155k. This is a common problem on autos though. Not a single other problem. No leaks, no rattles. I even have N2O and just installed it a few months back with over 150k. I had an 85 before that. That 85 is still running with almost 300k on the original motor. Replaced the tranny once at around 170k. As stated before, totally expected. I gave the car to my dad as a spare and he still drives it to this day. He prefers to do his errand running in it as opposed to his other cars. I whole heartedly believe our engines, if maintained properly, will last as long as just about any japanese engine. Domestics are a totally different ball game. They're not designed the same way and do not last, typically, as long as our engines do. BTW, for a 5spd all you replace, typically, is the clutch, pressure plate, and bearing when you rebuild. Not an extensive job. Not compared to the price of an auto.

I have a 96 5spd. I had to replace both CV joints about 3 months ago, and my slave cylinder just sprung a leak. My clutch is still ok, although I dont know how much longer that will last. 90K and still goin strong

My 96 GXE (148K) is starting to leak a TINY bit of auto tranny fliud from the trans pan nut, but that will be solved when I change the trans fluid next (getting new stamping on bottom of pan). Other than that, everything's original and running smooooooooth and sweet. If you maintain it and don't beat on it all the time, you'll get MAXimum miles from it.
