low-budget upgrades
I just a bought a dark-red 98 SE 5-spd... and i'd like to start doing upgrades. What are some simple and relatively inexpensive (<$500) upgrades I could do? I'd like to start with performance, but appearance is good too...

Get a Y pipe from Budgetexaust.com, only $175! and about 15whp, intakes....
Use the search function at the top of the page to find inexpensive mods, www.customaxima.com has some great products.

Cheap and effective goodies for less than $500:
Intake: Best way to go is hybrid: CAI upper pipe + cone filter combo. Check out cattman.com to see what they look like. Cost about $200.
Y-pipe: Cattman, Stillen, WarpSpeed and Budget Exhaust all sell Y pipes. Prices range from $175 to $375 new.
FSTB: this, along with the rear sway bar, are the first step in improving your Maxima's handling. If you shop smart (i.e. AVOID STILLEN), you can get both items for less than $200.
Pedals: Not exactly a true performance item, but if you drive a stick and are really into heel-toe downshifting and such, acquiring wider pedals is a must.
Underdrive Pulley: Less effective with an auto, but great when if you have a stick. It's generally well-recommended. goes for $200ish
hope this small list helps. There's more out there but I'm having problems thinking at the moment...it's rather late. I can't comment on lighting, stereo, etc. as they don't aid in performance in anyway, so I generally ignore em.
