low-budget upgrades

I just a bought a dark-red 98 SE 5-spd... and i'd like to start doing upgrades. What are some simple and relatively inexpensive (<$500) upgrades I could do? I'd like to start with performance, but appearance is good too...

Get a Y pipe from Budgetexaust.com, only $175! and about 15whp, intakes....

Use the search function at the top of the page to find inexpensive mods, www.customaxima.com has some great products.

or you can do whatever you want without listening to newbies
you have a 5 speed, buy a y pipe, intake, catback and some good tires and you can be running high 14s but you got to look good doing it too.

thats not alot of work. Your times all depend on how good you drive. This is all with a OK driver. there are people who will have better times but this is the norm

1. Clear front turn signal lenses - 35$ on ebay

2. tint the windows - 150-200$

3. get a y-pipe - 175-350$

that will give you a little bit of everything

Cheap and effective goodies for less than $500:

Intake: Best way to go is hybrid: CAI upper pipe + cone filter combo. Check out cattman.com to see what they look like. Cost about $200.

Y-pipe: Cattman, Stillen, WarpSpeed and Budget Exhaust all sell Y pipes. Prices range from $175 to $375 new.

FSTB: this, along with the rear sway bar, are the first step in improving your Maxima's handling. If you shop smart (i.e. AVOID STILLEN), you can get both items for less than $200.

Pedals: Not exactly a true performance item, but if you drive a stick and are really into heel-toe downshifting and such, acquiring wider pedals is a must.

Underdrive Pulley: Less effective with an auto, but great when if you have a stick. It's generally well-recommended. goes for $200ish

hope this small list helps. There's more out there but I'm having problems thinking at the moment...it's rather late. I can't comment on lighting, stereo, etc. as they don't aid in performance in anyway, so I generally ignore em.
