Auto Tranny Normal Temp?
Auto Tranny Normal Temp?
Hi. I am about to upgrade my auto tranny so I decided to install a cooler and a gauge. What is the normal temp an auto tranny should be running after driving for a little while. Basically I am trying to see what "normal" temps should be. Like for example 50 degrees when idle, 60 after first driving...you get the point.
Thank you,
Erik

Normal operating temp. 50-80C or 122-176F.
Tranny cooler does work. When my car starts to move, the tranny temp drops by 20F right away. Fresh air cooling down the cooler. It doesn't do much when the car is just sitting at the light. If anytime the tranny fluid goes above 200F, the fluid starts to break down.

Got this from dcflags.com, they sell tranny coolers (thanks ptatohed):
When your transmission fluid reaches 200 ° it starts breaking down.
At 240 ° varnishes form and transmission life expectancy is cut in half.
At 260 ° the transmissions internal seals and rubber parts harden and major damage starts.
Above 295 ° you transmission start slipping, clutches burn out and carbon forms.
With each 20 ° drop in operating temperature, your fluid and equipment life doubles.

Thanks for the post though, I'll take those #'s into consideration too.
