Throttle Body Cleaning Day
Throttle Body Cleaning Day
Had a car preventative maintenance cleaning the other day. My buddy (91 300zx TT), my fiance (95 Civic EX 1.6 5spd), and I all got together and decided to clean our throttle bodies. We all go to pep boys and pick up a big can of CRC Air Intake Cleaner - the spray can that has a picture of a big throttle body on it. We then dropped by Round Table and picked up a pizza and some wings - had to eat before we got down and dirty.
Anyways, we started working, and I followed the nice www.motorvate.ca instructions on cleaning the TB. Disassembly was pretty easy. The TB was dirty as a ****. I haven't cleaned it ever since I got the car new and that was about 86000 miles ago. I sprayed the cleaner liberally and scrubbed with a toothbrush that ended up looking absolutely hideous. All in all, after about 30 minutes of cleaning, we were just about all done. It was relatively easy. My fiance, being the wrench maniac that she is, decided to completely remove her throttle body out of the engine compartment. Unfortunately she discovered a cracked throttle body gasket that needs replacement. Other than that little incident, there were no other problems whatsoever.
We all started up the cars, took a couple tries. Waited for the cars to warm up and spit out the black smoke before going for a test drive. The car idles fine at 700 rpm now, instead of a fluctuating 900 rpm from before. The throttle seems a bit more responsive than before, but its probably all mental. Didn't really notice any gains otherwise, but that was expected. It was quite a fun day.
On a side note, later that night as I was driving home- there was this poor cute little white dog that ran onto the freeway. I saw that dog running straight across the freeway with a freaked out look across its face. It was pretty late so there were no cars next to me, and I swerved hard left over an entire lane at 70mph to avoid hitting the dog. It was a close one... felt so bad for the dog that my fiance and I returned to look for it, but we couldn't find it. Hope the poor guy made it home safely.
