Auto trans maintenance at the dealer
#1
I got a card in the mail from the dealer where I bought my car for a full auto transmission flush and fill, it says up to 12 quarts. Price $79.95. Is this a good deal and should I do it? My 97 auto has 72K.
Thanks.
Thanks.

An ordinary driveway drain-and-refill removes roughly half of the fluid. If you do your own oil changes, you could make ATF change part of your routine. If you already have the car up on jackstands and you already have your hands dirty, it is not a big deal. If you do an ATF drain-and-refill with every second motor oil change, your automatic transmission will always be running on almost-new fluid. This alternative might cost you ten quarts of ATF per year, and that's less expensive than $80.

80 for a drain and fill? flush also?
what nissan dealer is this? that is a pretty good deal. I know that when I hit 30K I did a drain and refill and it cost me almost 65 bucks at my local dealer here in NY. I actually didn't know as much then and thought it to be a drain and flush then refill.
oh well--live and learn.

If your transmission fluid has never been changed, now is a good time to do it. Nissan does not require ATF changes, but it is cheap insurance. Most of the Quicky-Jiffy-Iffy lube establishments also have the Magic Sucker Pump which removes all of the used fluid. $80 is a reasonable price but shop around; you might save a few dollars.

I had a complete flush and refill done at the dealer. This wasn't the typical one, they COMPLETEY flushed everything out with some new machine. It cost me like $150, but it was worth it, Car shifts like brand new now, and it has 73,000 miles.

I personally like the 5sp but I had to get the auto since I broke my left foot. I got an auto 95 SE.
If I am going to change the ATF do-it-yourselves, what is a good automatic transmission fluid? Is there a way of flushing all the ATF without the use of the Magic Sucker Pump? Is there ATF filter that need to be replaced as well?

Synthetic ATF
ouch, that is not worth the time. Then better have the auto lube shop does it.
I do not know if this has been discussed before but does using synthetic ATF worth the cost compare the regular ATF. Is there any noticeable improvement?

DOnt go tot the dealer and have your trans serviced. That is the most costly price ever. I dont know about you but I will not pay $80 for a drain and fill. If you go to a Valvoline or a Jiffy Lube they charge $20 for it and it will take about 4qts. If you do a complete trans service where it is hooked up to a T-Tech, it will cost you about $80 or so from JF or Valvoline. They dealer will spank you there again. The full trans service w/ T-Tech taps into your trans cooler lines adn sucks it all out while filling w/ new fluid. A typical drain and fill can be done by you in your drive way. 10 mins, if that. If your running synthetic ATF, do some research on it. Go with redline.

I just had mine done
I have 60,000 miles and I just had mine done. I shopped around and the dealer was the same price as everywhere else, $66.00. They didn't just flush and fill. They removed the bottom pan and flushed all of the fluid, they cleaned the metal screen that is used as a transmission filter, and they replaced the gasket. Then they filled it back up with fluid. It is very good preventive maintenance.

This is actually what nissan recommends on newer cars and trucks. You don't pump it out and then refill after though. You pour the new stuff in while the old is pumping and then stop when the fluid coming out looks new.
