Cut at least 5 inches off. Use a butter knife.

Cut about 1.5 inches with a hacksaw. Smooth off the end and most aftermarket ***** should fit fine.

i did it to mine about a month ago....

use a dremel with some cutting discs and cut off to about .25" below the end of the threads... then use the round sanding pads on the dremel and make it smooth and even...

make sure you tape a cloth or tarp or something up all around the shifter and from of your car (esp. the seats) or you will have metal shavings everywhere in your car...

any aftermarket **** will fit i have a 5zigen

NO it doesn't shorten the throw... it makes it a bit more notchy (don't ask i don't get it) but it does feel and look alot better as stock they are about the size of a small pickup's

extra note if you want an aftermarket shifter to work i suggest snading the two "tabs" down that are right below where you cut else you won't belabe to get the screw cover to screw on the shift ****.

i cut it about a month ago. I dont know how many inches exactly but i cut it just above the little pieces that stick out to hold up the shift boot. Its much more comfortable now. And most likly any shift **** will fir since most aftermarket one use an allen screw to hold them in place

Just get the Pacesetter. It's ~$80. Will shorter throw dramaticaly, and lower the shifter.

I cut mine 1.5 at the advice of the org originally.. that was ok w/ an aftermarket shifter, but i dont like that bs.. I wanted my black leather shifter back on there to match my all black interior.. it sat on there, but b/c of the threads up in the shifter, I needed to cut about another inch of to make it look the right height, so all in all 2.5inches and i love it.. shifting is alittler harder, so that sucks... but such is life, its worth it -

here is a pic -

Simple physics: less leverage.

I basically ripped my stock shifter apart trying to get it off. It was on pretty tight. I've heard similar stories, good luck finding one.
