I don't know what's wrong, I think I have the slowest '99. I saw this guy in a ('99 or '00) gold camry flying by on the freeway whipping around slower cars, so I sped up a little to check out the car. When I catch up he's got no visible mods, except a couple pillar guages. All of a sudden I see there's no traffic in front of us, and he speeds up a little, so I drop into 4th (around 75 at this point), speed up to match him, then GUN IT! Well right away we're at it, he takes a 3 or 4 foot lead, but around 90 or 100, I catch back up to exactly even, then (F*CK ME) he just takes off!! I just struggled all the way up to 110 (still in 4th), and all the while he's pulling away, got about 1 car on me by that time. I gave up cuz I had the girlfriend in the car and refused to be further humiliated.

What the hell was that all about? All I have is a JWT intake, and it was 45 degrees outside, so heat shouldn't have been an issue. It was all 4th gear, race from 80 to 110, so bad shifting wasn't the problem. I just don't get it. Should a Camry be able to pull on me like that stock? Think maybe he had NOS or something? I think if he was SC or turbo there would have been no contest, but I actually gained ground until around 90-100, then he blew me away.

Watch out for those Camry guys out there.

 

pillar guages + no exterior mods = NOS or supercharger... he must have been a sleeper.. I doubt any stock Camry could take you.

hey man...that is not too bad...
I dunno if he actually has S/C or NOS...but camry has quite comparable engine to ours...so it might be that you lose to a stock too...that has pillar to monitor fuel flow and oil temp...but not boost pressure or other boost related stuff

You raced from 80-110 right?Why did'nt you race him in third gear from 80-98MPH and then switch into 4th gear?That would have given you a far better chance of wining.Theres always a next time.

I think I suck at racing, cuz you're right emax. I was just cruising in 5th when we took off, so I dropped it into 4th for more power, not realizing I still had some 3rd gear left. Dammit I'm kicking myself in the *** right now, I should have been in 3rd. Dammit.

Obviously I need to get more highway racing experience under my belt. I would have pulled on him *HARD CORE* if I had been in 3rd. Prolly would've had a car length on him by 100, then he might have started to catch up in 4th, but at least it would've been close!!!

I hereby profess to *NEVER* let a Camry do that again.

I told my gf when we got home I would get on this board and get to the bottom of this. She laughed (she knows I spend alot of time here anyways), but I knew you guys would be able to help me out.

 

Even though we can chalk that one up to driver error, I'm getting a damn Y-Pipe. Hopefully that'll help accommodate for future gearing mishaps. "no visible mods", right? hehe...

Well, lets assume that was a 5-spd V6 Camry (yes, they do exist, but only in base LE V6 models). I won't even comment if it was an AUTOMATIC Camry. (ha!)

The truth is, that a 5-spd V6 Camry is just as fast as a 5-spd V6 Maxima. Or pretty darn close. So don't feel bad if you lost to a 5-spd Camry. Now if it was an automatic......ok I won't even get into that.

 

Nah, she trusts me, but I notice her tighten up sometimes when I execute my 85 mph freeway fly-overs, or my 50 mph merging right turns, she knows I'm concentrating and doesn't say too much... I think she got used to it when I had my RX-7 turbo.
She was almost laughing when we hit 100 tonight and this Camry was leaving us behind, I was actually telling the car "Go! Go! Come ON!!! Don't let this happen baby!!!" She was smiling, going "Uh-oh... your baby is letting you down". It was already over by then.

So tell me, do you guys have your girls yelling at you when you go too fast? What's her breaking point? Is it turning and burning too aggressively, or jetting around at 100?

You probably saw what was a camry with a TRD supercharger, hence the pillar gauges. Adds as much power as the Stillen Supercharger, so most likely you saw one of those and it kicked your ***.

 

One thing I don't get is, why do you assume you must be faster than him?? He has a V6 with 200hp just like you.

when i down shift hard, shes like "thats annoying" or "why do you do that." although for some reason this one night she liked it when i was going for the top speed. ****, im straight babling. ohwell. just save it for the drag races on the weekends.

 

I'm not saying I "must be faster than him". My complaint was that he just trounced all over me once we got over 95-100 mph. I realize the cars are very similar in stock configuration as far as power to wieght ratio, and that's my problem. I just wish it had been closer. Like emax said, there's always next time.

I noted in the Stillen catalogue that they offer a TRD supercharger for Camrys. With the pillar gauges one of them must be for boost. Thats my take on this particular Camry.

 

Dropping to 3rd from 5th at 75mph can kinda hard on the powertrain. Not that I don't do it mind you. Last time I did this a Celica was tailgating me at ~80mph and I saw a cloud of smoke come out of my tailpipe...... Weird effect at night with his punk *** blue dipped headlights glaring in my rear view mirror.

3rd runs out at 90 on my car (redline) 4th is usually sufficient to take out people. From 80 - 115 is where I actually notice most of my power mods. That and right off the line.

 

I have seen a white 99 Camry pulling exceptional strong at around 80+ mph. I was going over the SF Bay bridge on a Sat/Sun night. That darn thing blew by me like I was sitting still. I caught up to him after he got blocked. however, the Camry pulled away at a much faster pace once the road was clear. Under the protest of my passenger, I had to watch him zipped thru cars inside the tunnel portion @ treasure island.

Still, that Camry is way faster than your standard issue.

 

I'm guessing that was me, because I don't know of another tan Camry with the TRD Supercharger. Plenty of other ones around, but mainly on the west coast. There is another in TX though...I'll leave you guys to guess as to where.

When we lined up side to side, I didn't know that we were going to race (heh), so I left it in 5th. But when you started going, I decided to drop it to third, and wind it to 110 in 4th.

We're not the underdog. I ran 14.9 @ 92 100% stock, and outdynoed a Maxima with intake + y-pipe (Andi) when I was stock. No NA Maxima beat me in racing when I was NA, either.

damn! We can't have Camry's faster then Maximas, no no no...... no freakin way! I will loose a major Camry vs. Maxima argument to my friend even though I creamed his 92 LE V6 Camry. ****

 

The 92 LE V6 is slower than the newer camrys. Plus we're talking 5 speed to 5 speed right? auto to 5 speed is a different story. I noticed the biggest difference when i raced my friends auto camry to my camry....5 speed makes the car into a different monster altogether for maximas and camrys.
