99 SE-L ecu error codes

What in the world does a 1401 and 1402 code mean? All I can find out is that the codes stop with 13. How different are the 99 ecu computers?

No one really knows or gets the 14xx error codes. I believe in the FSM there are few codes listed which are related to the EGR. However, the 14xx codes are a 1999 specific code so unless you have a 1999 FSM you're out of luck. njmaxseltd may be able to help on this one. He gave me some info, but I deleted the PM

Sorry guys, I only have the Haynes book. I'll check later on today for you, but I don't think it's got all the codes either.

Here's the answer:

Diagnostic Trouble Codes come in two "flavors"...
- ECM Codes which the home mechanic can read.
- Scan Codes which the professional technician can read with a CONSULT or a commercial scan tool.

ECM codes are always 4 numerics. Scan codes are always the letter P
followed by 4 numerics. The P stands for Powertrain. The two sets of codes have no obvious correlation. Both sets appear in the Factory Service Manual, the Chilton repair manual, and the Haynes repair manual.

MaximaMike99SE,

You reported codes 1401 and 1402, but did not say how these codes were obtained. Perhaps they came from a CONSULT or scan tool, and
should be described as P1401 and P1402. The 1999 Maxima Factory Service Manual does not show any ECM codes in the 14xx range. According to the FSM ...

P1401 = 0305, Exhaust Gas Recirculation temperature sensor or circuit fault.
P1402 = 0514, Exhaust Gas Recirculation system fault. The EGR valve is open when it should be closed.

The EGR system on the '99 Maxima engine is different from earlier models. However, both of the referenced Diagnostic Trouble Codes are mentioned in the Haynes manual on page 6-8.

0305:

I would fix 0305 first, since 0514 seems to allude to an overall system problem, and 0305 actually points to a sensor to check.

Those are the codes that njmax mentioned to me when I had my 1405 code. The 14xx ECM codes do exist, but aparrently they are rare occurances.
