How bad is it when you hear the grinding sound when you misshift?

been doing this lately with my worn out clutch.. just curious.

Well your grinding your gears it cant be good........

If it is something that happens in a rare occasion I dont think it would be too bad but with a higher frequency you'll be leaving shards of metal in the tranny fluid. This will only destroy the tranny with time. If it has been occuring frequently adjust your driving style. Rectify whatever issues you have with your clutch and have the tranny fluid changed so you're not running fluid that has bits of metal in it.

First off:

Make sure you've got the right level of fluid in the your tranny. A slow leak could leave you with nothing.

Other than that it sounds like your syncros are going. Make sure you've got a GL-4 based oil in the tranny like RedLine's MT-90 or something similiar. A GL-5 gear oil will wreck the Maxima syncros in no time flat since the sulfur compounds in the GL5's tend to eat the bronze in the syncro.... GL-5's are also too slippery for the syncros to engage correctly and will result in grinding.

But if all that checks out, it'll be time for a rebuild pretty soon. Match your revs real carefully on gentle shifts and it'll last a little longer. How many miles on it?

ive got about 72k miles on it. the reason why it is happening recently is because my clutch is worn real bad and my shift point is down to the floor. im getting the clutch replaced very soon, but i was wondering what it does on the tranny. i might consider doing a tranny flush in the near future too.

From what it sounds like, his synchros are probably fine. He's just missing the release point because it's moved so low to the floor over time, or something among those lines.

Heh...from what I know about synchros, you can tell they're going when you have the clutch depressed as much as is needed, but it still grinds the shift. This would happen in my old acura on 1->2 shifts...I'd have my clutch to the floor and every now and then it'd still crunch.
