Dealer guy said that the CV BOOTS need replacement or else it will result in further complications which will cost $200,000 to fix. Anyway, a guy said that Van's Autoparts sells the right CV BOOTS and its fairly easy to replace. Anyone have to do this or get it done? Is it really needed or are they just trying to take advantage of a 17 year old white boy? Peace.

i have heard of maximas having cv joint probs etc- i myself have a loud clicking noise in the front when i turn , i thought it was my cv joint so i took it to the mechanic and he said i need a whole new front axle and i guess cv joints and front axles are connected in some way so i need a new front axle now - and they told me $170 installed for the new front axle - but wh ywould you spend 200,000 on fixing it - you could buy a nice 50,000 car and have 150,000 leftover instead of spending 200,000 to fix it

I just finished replacing all four CV boots and repacked them with grease. If you leave the CV boot(s) ripped this can cause damage to the the CV joint itself, which will end up costing you a lot of money. Replacing the boots is not a fun job, but it's a lot less costly than replacing the joints. Instead of replacing the boots you can also buy a rebuilt half-shaft for a little more.

CV joints are basically U-joints that are sealed and packed. A clicking noise denoted needing replacement.

Yeah, definatly get those replaced A.S.A.P. 'cause they protect the Cv joints. If the boots are ripped or torn all kinds of garbage can get in the joints and cause them to be damaged(clicking noice when turning). Btw, front wheel drives have alot of problems with this.

Did you check the boots yourself or just take the dealer's word for it? Take a look and see if the boots are ripped, cracked or chunks missing. Another tale-tale sign is if there is grease slung all over your wheel well, the back side of your wheel and the bottom half of the strut assembly.

IMO if you see any of the above, replace them.

You can replace just the boots or replace the axle assembly.

If you have a shop do the work, you might as well have them replace the CV axles, not just the boots. The cost is about the same (if you use rebuilt axles).

And that's because, if you replace just the boots, the parts are cheaper (obviously) but the labor is more. And vice versa if you put in CV axles.

A GOOD/EXPERIENCED shop can replace BOTH axles in an hour. I had BOTH of mine replaced with rebuilt axles for about $180.

My boots are starting to leak from the end. My mechanic quoted me 200.00 to replace the boots. I haven't had this done yet but now I'm starting to notice clicking when starting off in reverse with the wheels turned. There are 66,000 miles on it. Does anyone know how long axles last?

You might as well use new ones from www.raxels.com the replacements are rebuilt and invariably need replacing in about 10-15,000miles new ones from raxels can't be too much more perhaps 170.00 per side and there new and replacement wouldn't occur for many many many miles later

like e'erbody said...just go ahead and have them replaced. I just replaced both axles...on the car...saved about 250 doing it myself. Not a bad job, took time (my first time)

Thank you for your input. I want to keep my Max for a long time so I'll have the axles replaced.
