Intermittent Speedometer/Odometer Problem

Hey guys:

Did a search, but didn't find a problem quite like this, so I was hoping you could help. My speedometer likes to randomly fall to zero (which in turn stops my odometer from working). Some time later it will pop back up to speed. It is happening more often than it used to, and honestly is becoming quite annoying. It seems to happen more frequently when it's wet, or when the car has been idle for a long time. Also, it seems to do it only during city driving....fine on the highway.

I am unfamiliar with the setup of our speedometer, and it seems like it would be an electrical short or soemthing similar, but again, I wouldn't know where to start looking. My ECU is pusing an ECU code too....can't remember the exact one at the moment, but it is a speed sensor code. I'll check again tonite.

I have a 96 GLE with 98k on it. So far I've probably put on 15-20 "unregistered" miles, so as much as I'd like to keep rolling w/ 98k I'm just too nice. Plus, if I ever bought a car to later find out someone had been doing that to me.....ooooohhhh. So, help me NOT rip someone off. thanks

Check that ECU code.

Then buy a haynes manual and go through the diagnostic procedure for the Vehicle Speed Sonsor.
