i just bought a 96 Max 5 speed and a mechanic told me someone re-wired the car before, they shut down the engine light.
now when i turn the key to "on", all expected lights except the engine light are on.

so can you provide some hints on it, what the problem might be, how to fix it.

Maybe, take the cluster out and check for any current going to the circuit, or check for a burned out bulb?

 

The only reason I can think of for unhooking the light is to make it go off. That means it was probably on for some reason they didnt feel like fixing.

I would run far, far away from this car.

Get it hooked back up and pull the codes to see what kind of trouble is hiding in there
