Knock Sensor Code... but no check engine light...?

Well, i have been suspicious of a bad AKS, i finally went out and did the self diagnostic on the car. 0304 is the only code i got, and i know this is the AKS. But why is my check engine light not on?

i am 90% certain i need to replace it. i just wanted to make sure.

also, just to triple check, the AKS is about 5 inches in, under the intake manifold right? it didnt look that deep in from the pics, oh well, i guess it has to be done.

best place to get one at courtesy?

thanks in advance!

oh, one more thing... is it possible that it is just a bad ground to the AKS? would i still need to replace it if it is the ground?

that is the code, and alone, the KS does NOT trip the CEL....only in conjuction with another code, will you get it....if you check it without the CEL on, you still may get the KS code if its busted.....a nissan technician, told me that i shouldnt worry about it (i too have the code), and to just come in and have them diagnose the car for me ($75), and then have them tell me if anything is wrong with me car.....well i see it this way...they wnat to charge for that, then they are just gonna tell me my KS is bad, and then have them change that anways...but **** that, ima buy me one, and then have it installed, and hopefully thatll make the error code go away, and my gas mileage to return

so you are telling me to replace it right?

yeah, my "personal" mechanic said he would pull codes for $70 too. i figure, that my own code pulling, experience and recommendations from you guys is all pointing me to the AKS, i will go ahead and replace it. but i am gonna do this one myself! damn i am glad i pulled those codes, makes me confident, not just a shot in the dark guess that it is the AKS.

yes id replace it .....make sure to reset the ECU after changing it or it will stay there....also, if you go to Auto zone, they will do a free diagnosis on your car (or so it says on the little spin thingie)...i dunno what it includes, but if they make you buy the parts to fix it (maybe thats a clause or something), then **** your fudged....knock sensors there are $260 !!! .....also, why do you refer to it as AKS ?

I did my Knock sensor in my i30 last week. It actually wasnt too bad, didn't cut my hands, but did scrape the crud out of my wrist! My hands aren't small, but it was still really no problem.

It took care of my jerky acceleration, but my idle is still pretty low. I also did NGK Platinum plugs, oil change, and air filter all at the same time, and car feels great!

WHile I am on it, I got new tires, an alignment, and put 99 i30 jewel type headlights on. I just got the car recently, and now I feel like I have a new car again!

EDIT: I forgot to add that my CEL never came on....

My harness was perfectly fine.....yours may or may not be, but I didn't want to spend the extra, and that worked out!

Yes, the wiring harness is already on your car. You will need a long extension, a 12mm socket, and some patience. You should be able to take it out and just put the new one back in. As mentioned before, you will have to reset the ecu once done, so the CEL will go out.

follow those...and use the tools he suggested. Takes 15 mins. Get someone with small hands to help.

mmmmmm, I love my obdII scanner. I can pull codes, and reset the ECU without ever having to turn that damned screw! I love that scanner!

My KS is also bad, so I'm ordering one on the first when I get paid. If it's not one thing it's another on this car! lol

JdawgX...Funny you should mention your scanner...I just received by OBDII interface...running software on a laptop...am enjoying mine as well.

On the subject of knock sensors...Has anyone tried removing the sensor from it's harness (I'm visualizing that the sensor is part of a sensor/harness assembly - which the bolt passes through), cleaning and reinstalling? I'm trying to see if I should try this before ordering a replacement.

Thanks.

It's not the job that concerns me...I would just feel like a dope if I spent $130 (nominally) on the sensor, if the problem is poor connectivity. I think the only way to know, is to try it...I was wondering if anyone had been successful cleaning the sensor-to-harness connection rather than replacing it.

when you take the sensor out, you will see that the knock sensor connections are sealed pretty well. after nearly 7 years, my knock sensor looked almost as good as the new one, it just didnt function .

Miasma,
Thanks for the feedback re: condition of connection. Based on your insight, I'm convinced...Guess I'll just bite the bullet and buy one.

I just called them for a quote and they said they have no listing for a KS sensor.

Just received and installed mine today from them. The invoice says Bosch P/N F6020-51596. I have a '96 if it matters, but probably not. I ordered through the website at http://catalog.thepartsbin.com and found the KS under engine_electrical.
