I, personally, never heard of a transmission fluid filter. Just click on this link and you'll get all the info you need.

very impressed...I am very impressed...it is very good citizenry of you to be thinking of that.
I am not sure if there is a filter. Then again, I feel that I can't believe everything Nissan tells you. I took my car to the dealer for the 30k tranny drain and fill and they laughed when I mentioned "tranny filter" (lousy idiiots--I'll show them and be a maximaniac)
If there is a filter in there--it might be difficult to get too...
where is Mr. Daniel Martin --the night is young...he'll show up and the resident guru will field these questions for us once and for all.

My own Maxima has a 5-speed. I cannot address this point from personal experience, so I went to the book. The '99 Maxima factory service manual refers to an "oil strainer" which is bolted to the control valve assembly. They don't call it a filter and nowhere do they recommend replacing this part. If my car had an automatic transmission I would change only the fluid and be content with that.

ok...here is what little I know

there is a filter....but does not really need to be replaced....errr ...I might be wrong...all you need to do for it is flush it or something.... (OK I might be dead wrong)....but that is what I read somewhere...

and then there is the transmission gasket...ok..someone mentioned this were metal..because I asked if I need to replace them...and they said it is made of metal....
err ok....this is nissan tech rep....
Oh well.....
I dunno....just passing what I know...and somebody please correct my mistakes..thanks...

A Little Confused

I just bought my maxima and I am preparing to do a tranny fluid change in my auto trans. According to my Chiton Total Care manual there is a filter that is replaceable once the pan is dropped. They have pictures showing it. It look like a standard auto filter. Furthermore, I checked CarParts.com website and they sell auto trans filter kits from 4 manufacturers ranging in price from $15-$20. That is the usual price for for a filter and gasket. I thought the only cars w/o replaceable filers were Hondas?

Can a member with an auto who has taken the pan off please let us know.

Also at 60K its a good idea to change to coolant, fuel filter, air filter, and PCV valve along with the trans fluid and oil.

If you are switching to redline it is a good idea to have a system flush at Jiffy Lube as Daniel Martin suggested in other posts. A do-it-yourself change only removes about half the fluid and it would be a shame to mix old Dexron w/redline.
