If I keep the exhaust stock and just change the muffler, how much will the sound change? I was looking for something not too expensive, like Dynomax, Thrush California Turbo, or maybe the ones Meineke showed me (Naxos, Vortex, or Pilot). I want to hear it at idle and accelerating, but not droning on the highway. Also, are there any that just bolt on to the stock B-pipe?

 

I just had my MagnaFlow mirror-finish muffler added to the stock cat back setup...and even though I have the Stillen Y-Pipe I dont think it is too loud...some drone at low rpm but not bad...just right for me...too bad the wifey doesn't like it...I may get a different resonator instead of the stock one to tone it down a bit and keep teh performance increase.

 

I have a Hayame type-3 muffler welded to the stock exhaust piping...there is a mild drone throughout the lower rpm range...it is usually not a bolt-on procedure with mufflers unless you get the HKS...gonna have to be welded on b/c a pipe needs to be bent..

 

At WOT....earbleeding is reported throughout my county.

Your stock muffler is wonderful. Keep that. Save your money. And MOD your way from the muffler to the front of the car. 1. Ypipe 2. Bpipe

To satisfy your hunger for now...pick out a nice tip (4inches maximum please)from Pep Boys and have Meineke weld it on for $20.

If you are getting a muffler you should DEFINATELY change the b-pipe. Get a whole catback system. The b-pipe right behind the muffler is crushed down so tight that it screws up your whole exhaust flow. I got a catback system and it made a huge difference in my car (Just as big a difference as the y-pipe). If you just change the muffler you'll be paying <$200 for a tin can that will do nothing for your car-maybe like 1-2hp. Save up an extra hundred bucks and get the piping behind it. If you're concerened with style than just get a tip on your exhaust. It makes more sense to do something that is actually good for your car if you're gonna be spending that kind of money

 

i totally agree with these guys...i just got a muffler so far but the car already had an aftermarket exhaust on it, nothing crazy but better than stock, and i'm gonna get a budget y pipe soon. get a tip welded on and save your money cuz it'll look just as good and cost a lot less.

 

I really wanted to do this mainly for sound, as well as not being too expensive. Also the reason I wanted to keep the factory B-pipe was to keep the resonator on so it doesn't get too noisy, just a little deeper sound.

 

How do you like the Apexi WS ?? Its inbetween that and an N1 muffler with a Stillen B-pipe < setup will be too loud

I love the Apex'i setup. It gives a low rumble at idle and it snarls when you open her up. Definately louder than stock but not by much. When you accelerate it sounds deeper but when you're just cruising, there is hardly any sound coming out of that thing. I have a 97 so there were some fitment issues, but nothing any dumbass mechanic couldn't handle. The O2 sensor for 97-99 is on the b-pipe but there is no hole for it on the Apex'i b-pipe so they had to drill one in and make sure they have an oxygen sensor nut too. Other than that it's all good. Oh, and if you're changing your exhaust (i.e. y-pipes) you should definately change the b-pipe. It is crushed near the muffler real bad, tighter than Britney Spears' ****. I noticed a huge difference from that. It won't be loud if you have a resonator on it.
