weird sound coming from engine...

When my 5spd '96 Max is idling, i can hear this weird sound from the engine... I don't know how to describe the sound. It sounds like a vibration.. but it vibrates and fades at 1-2 second intervals... i tried to listen more carefully and its coming somewhere within or the left of the engine. Anyone had this prob before or may have an idea on what may be causing it? Thanks

It is always difficult to locate weird sounds that a car makes and darn near impossible to diagnose from a written description. You have got to isolate exactly where the sound is coming from. As Daniel B. Martin has recommended so many times, get a 3-4 foot length of vacuum hose and use it as a stethiscope. You will be amazed at how well you can hear the individual rotating parts. Just be careful around the alternator belts and radiator fans.

I think I have the same vibration sound that you have described. For the life of me I have not been able to pin point it. Please let me know if you find yours...Thanks

I had a similar problem but with a knocking with the vibration as well. Turns out my #1 spark plug was damaged (on the left). Check yours if you can.
