Variable Flow 2000 Muffler vs. Aftermarket
- Here's my problem: I want power from the intake/exhaust I'm planning on, but I hate how loud aftermarket set-ups sound on Ricer 4-bangers. ***(I have not heard how a Maxima with an exhaust sounds, so if it's better than what I've heard, please tell me.)***
- I'm currently planning on a Place Racing CAI, ported heads, Jet-Hot Y-Pipe, and stock catalytic converter.
- Should I go with a B-pipe($250?) and the $290.48 Nissan Variable Flow Muffler? - Or should I go with the HKS($350) or GReddy($650) cat-backs? I DO want to increase the volume, but I DON'T want to sound like an annoying Ricer and I don't want it so loud that I attract police attention from afar.
- Thanks for your help. ;-)

Hi Sleeper,
I think you should go with a greddy catback, and a random technologies high flow cat.
I think this combo would work great on your car, plus the sound will be awesome for a V6. Yeah, it will be a little loud, but the greddy system still has resonators, so not too loud. I have that combo and it sounds great.....I think.

- Thanks for the info. I just heard an Acura 3.0CL with an exhaust drive by today. It sounded sweet! Kind of raspy and rumbly (but not too close to musclecar rumbly). Moderately high tech, even. What adjectives would you describe the GReddy with?
Well, it's pretty controlled at idle(but not in a garage).
There might be a little drony at lower rpm's, but in a higher gear. But not a bad or too loud drone. But it'll sound throaty as you get up in rpm's....ummm goood.
At higher rev's it will be rapping out a raspy(but not 4 banger raspy) sound. I wouldn't say it's grumbly or gurgly....that's more like a GS400 with the greddy power extreme dual set up...hehehe
But believe me, you won't be dissapointed if you spend the money for the cat and the greddy...I also have a 96 SE.
It makes a nice combination with the CAI and the downpipe as well.
If yu get the greddy and the RT CAT, let me know what yu think...

don't worry
your exhaust won't sound like any honda with an aftermarket muffler. v6's are a lot quieter than 4 cylinders. I was really skeptical when I got my muffler, but it sounds great. It is not very loud, you can't even hear it over the intake at full throttle. you will like it.
Well
I'd go with the Var nissan 2k Muffler... just cuz it's quiet and i want my car to be as quiet as possible as well as look stock ....
Also keep in mind .. if you get a ypipe and bpipe it will make the exhaust louder ... that acura you saw may only have had an exhaust .....
if you put just a greddy catback and leave stock ypipe and bpipe than sure it won't be that loud ..
but put the greddy with ypipe and stillen bpipe and it's gonna be noticebly louder ...
think about that...
I'd put.. ypipe, bpipe and 2K muffler.. this is the setup i will be gettting as soon as i pay off next semester tuiton

- Hey Ant95se, I agree with your setup. From what I've heard, the GReddy with the other exhaust mods is quite loud. It's also $650, which seems a bit high when HKS can cut it by 300 bucks. I'm dying to know what your proposal sounds and drives like when you get it.
- Concerning the Stillen B-Pipe though... Is it the HKS piece? I've heard from a few guys that a certain B-pipe rusts within 6-14 months, and I'm not sure which company it is. If it does rust, does Stillen have a nice warranty? What about the Courtesy B-Pipe? Is there anyone else who makes one?
- Anyway, good luck on the mod. PLEASE tell me what it sounds and drives like when you get it installed. Any comments on the B-pipes would be appreciated too. Also, what school are you attending?
It's all in the ear of the beholder.
The b-pipe can be done by a good custom exhaust shop.
I did it 3 years ago, and had a stillen muffler.
after investing in the b-pipe and the muffler, and combining the two.....You could get the greddy at the same cost(around). I got my greddy for a really good deal..
.
All the b-pipe really is, is elimination of the resonators and making a straight pipe back from the cat(proper curves). The greddy is made of really quality stuff.
The stillen I had rusted out(no warranty). It's like this.....I'm guessing if you go with the 2000 muffler,, your eventually gonna want some more for the car....FLOW and Sound.
Like I said, it's all in personal taste...but when you get the mod bug in you....your gonna want more...go for it now or later.
You may be content with the mild instead of the wild(wild really isn't that wild though).
You'll see....
Still...go with the random cat...you probably have enough miles on your car that you would benefit anyway.
peace

I am looking into the Warpspeed Performance ypipe, cat and bpipe....
they have made a few and will be doing dyno testing on dec 16-17 so when they post dyno charts i'll decide if i want it ... I also gotta get my car inspect b4 i do any exhaust mods or else i'll fail..
as far as bpipe i think stillen makes it w/o resonator but courtesy uses a resonator.. not sure.. i'd get it w/o the resonator tho..
Sure when i get it on i'll let ya know..
i go to Stevens Institute of Technology Hoboken, New Jersey

I was thinking about putting a 2k exhaust on my 98 but I was flamed by some guy because he thought it was ridiculous or stupid (he said something like that). Then I heard from another guy that the 4th generations lacked some kind of control unit to control the variable exhaust. I also want to put a y-pipe, r/t cat, and b-pipe but I don't want the noise.
I was thinking of adding a 2K muffler also
I was hoping the variable control was pressure controlled and had no other mechanics involved. I was going to get the muffler, b pipe, and short shifter so I could install all at the same time. I found a deal with a salvage yard for $50 for the muffler. I was hoping for some gains.
I'm goin' with the HKS
- Hey guys, thanks for all your help. I've finally decided to go with the HKS cat-back. I can get a good price on it in Orlando (around $280), it's quieter than the GReddy, and it actually has a warranty (unlike Stillen or Nissan). I just heard a 4th gen Maxima pass by today with that set-up and I liked it - quiet until upper RPM's, well-balanced sound, etc. With all the other exhaust mods, it should be just fine.
- Many people I've talked to here at school said that, although the Variable Flow Muffler seems cool, it will still be restrictive. (If it was all that, why would the 20th Anniversary Maxima use the Infinity I30 cat-back?) So, I say forget it. Plus, it costs too much and Nissan won't put a warranty on it. All it would take is one bad driveway with a lowered car and BAM - you're out another $300.
- Any thoughts on either system?

Well IMO I think you should get the greddy catback. It is noticible in the gains and it looks and sounds great. Not sure how noticible it will be if you dont have cai and a ypipe. The sound is deep and you will be amazed upon how much you like it. I gives your car a little more rumble. It is noticible at low rpms and then the cai takes over.
Alright already
- Okay, I see that you guys REALLY like the GReddy. Here are a few questions then...
1. How much did you guys get your GReddy's for? The only price I could find was $650.
2. Is the power going to be that much better than the HKS?
3. What components does the GReddy include?
4. Does the GReddy have a warranty? How long?
*5. If the HKS isn't cat-back, what is it?
*6. Will the R/T catalytic converter be that much better than stock?
- Please answer as many questions as possible. If you don't know an answer, please note it in your reply. Thank you. ;-)
- Anybody have a dyno figure on what the gains will be?

Matt
I have like I said earlier, the Greddy/CAI/Stillen downpipe/and RT cat. I love it!!!
E-mail me and I'll let you know about price and some other things. I agree with BluMax...sounds like he and I have the same type of setup. How many miles does your car have? The RT Cat will definitely benefit......I noticed it plenty in the seat of the pants. I did the replacement of the cat by itself so I was able to tell. Just going to a fresh cat would probably help too..but when you look at the RT, it's very straight thru design...flows reallly well.
I'm going to be putting on the unorthodox racing underdrive soon, and am waiting to get an ECU as well. These should help alot too....GLAD your going all the way to the greddy.
The greddy is a full cat-back, and the HKS would need a B-pipe equaling more money anyway.

Hmmm. Can't help but wonder how much you're paying for the Greddy name . . .
Guys, a pipe is a pipe. A no-name, custom-built, mandrel-bent cat back system with a straight-through muffler will perform as well as a name brand, mandrel-bent cat back system with a straight-through muffler. I had a complete custom-built, 2-1/2", mandrel-bent cat back system with a 24" Magnaflow muffler installed in my Max for $275.00. That doesn't include the cost of the tip. But even with a high-priced stainless steel tip, the cost is still under $400.00. From a performance standpoint, I'll put my exhaust system up against any name brand cat back system out there. And I've got money left over to buy other stuff.

Too bad we're so far from each other, TedMaximum . . .
You might feel differently if you had a chance to check out my exhaust. Still, your point is well taken. Anyone considering a custom cat back should only do business with a reputable shop.
