Anyone Know Anything About Headers?

i was on the custommaxima site today and he says he is going to start selling headers. in the past i have read on here that there was a company that was producing headers for the maxima but they didnt give an impressive gain. im wondering if these headers greg is going to be selling are the same or what. im wondering what kind of gains we can expect and what kind of prices to expect.

i dunno about his headers.. but other companies headers have shown little to nop gain.. waste of money... even DOn in texas did his own headers and he got minimal gains.. he even said it was pretty much a worthless mod

I would only get headers if I felt like throwing 400 out the window! There are many more things that are more impressive than headers.

Don't Touch It, Its EEVIL!

Definitely do not get the headers. The Y-pipe gives you more power for your buck and the headers will only be a pain in the *** to install. other than that, just upgrade your exhaust.

Actually, it depends on the flow #'s on the headers. If the stock exhaust manifolds are very restrictive, it's gonna pay off to get headers. I don't agree that you wouldn't find any significant gains. Intake, exhaust, and headers are some great bolt-ons.

The stock manifolds do flow well. Headers have been tried. They do show gains, but not enough to justify the huge price over just a Y-pipe.

Don proved that porting the factory manifolds makes little difference. The PP custom headers had severe fitment issues (leaks) from the start and even the manufacturer admitted to not spending much time on development.

I agree the factory manifolds don't seem like a huge restriction but has anyone even properly tested a well designed, quality made set of 4th Gen custom headers?

I'm no expert on exhaust theory and design, but since owning a maxima i've been wondering:

Why dosn't someone make a set of long tube headers that eliminate the y pipe for 'off road use' and put the collector somewhere closer to the cat perhaps relocating it further back, similar to the hooker super competitions (aka long tubes) for the LT1? Then use a short 'y' pipe instead of an 'f' pipe. Seems to me that shorties that replace only the stock manafold don't have much room for improvements, literaly, but a set of well designed ones with long runners may be useful.

of course the market may be too limited for any major company to consider this.

I think one reason why no one has been interested in getting headers is the install compared to the ypipe. Headers are much more difficult to install than a ypipe which only requires breaking 8 bolts loose while working directly under the car. Comments about "no gains" are justified to a certain extent for NA applications, but there are probably more gains especially for our boosted friends. OBX isn't the most respected company either from my experience.
