Cold Air Intake Questions
Hello:
Do most if not all the CAI units on the market utilize K&N filters? Anybody use AMSOIL filters with CAI?
I am toying around with the idea of getting a CAI but I don't want to use K&N. It is widely viewed that K&N doesn't filter air all that well at least when they are new... Once they get some dirt in them, the filtering is actually better. A rep at Jim Wolf Technology confirmed that viewpoint for me...
I still got my old K&N Stillen intake parts and now I got the stock intake air box...
Another thing I want to try is opening up wider the inlet of the lower air box and running some heat insulated hose to the same point that a CAI unit would end up at it's most upstream point just under the fender well. I think this would be an inexpensive experiment... Just need to saw out the hole that I would do anyway with a CAI and get some flexy hose and maybe some insulation from Home Depot....
This mainly is dependent on whether or not I can get a CAI and not use K&N --- to see if any benefits can be acheived by getting cooler air but still utilizing the paper OEM filter and OEM air box. The OEM setup draws some of its air from a port just under the battery but its all too restrictive looking....
Right now, I have one of those TECHTOM MDM-100 diagnostics units... where I can read the air flow meter voltage among other things on the display... I guess this thing could maybe give me some quantifiable evidence of air flow capability with different intake setups... It plugs into the auxilliary port on the lower left corner of the dash --- right behind the fuse panel... Unfortunately, it set me back about $400 dollars. But it's really nifty... I can view Injector Open time, Ignition Degrees, Intake Air temp, Water Temp, Air Flow Meter voltage... there are some other options related to the O2 sensor readings but I haven't had a chance to look at or figure out how to interpret those readings yet.

I have the Place Racing Cold Air Intake on my 96. I love it. I had the Stillen kit and sold it in like a month.
From what i know most kits on the market today use the K&N filters. That small box below the battery is just a muffler or sound deadener for the stock unit. I wripped that crap out when i installed the CAI. I Say just buy the CAI for like $220 and forget about it. IMHO!

Hey Chris!
Cattman's developing a new CAI... perhaps he'll consider offering filter elements other than K&Ns... might want to grop him a note. http://www.cattmanperformance.com/
