Stock Intake Question

Hey guys,
I was under my car today, figuring out how to replace the AC drier (have to replace the compressor too). When i was under there, I saw what looked like a tub, but the air scoop in the front has a 2" diameter elbow that goes to that tank. It is right under the battery, and does not appear to have any connections or anything...

what is it!?

is there any reason to keep it there? I mean, i just assume take out the stock air scoop and tub under the battery when i put my frankencar in.

is the tub beside the air scoop (just to the left) a functional unit?
if not, i will take that off too, makes a nice clean engine bay .

take it all out.

I took all that stock tubing out when I installed my Hybrid intake. There was probalbly 4 feet worth. I thought at first that leaving the scoop may bring air in and deposit it under my cone filter. After thinking about it it's easy to realize it won't do a damn thing. The engine bay looks much better without all that useless plastic.

The box you're referring to is known as a resonator. It tunes the sound of the intake and quiets it down. You can remove the one off of the scoop w/ no problems. Leave the hole there or attach a pipe and run it down towards the bottom of the engine bay for cooler air to enter your air intake stream.
The box (just to the left) is again a resonator, and you can remove it. If you remove this one though, make sure you plug the hole on the plastic box that will stay in the car. Trust me. It's after the MAF and you don't want to let air get in that way. Good luck.

If this is the same hole I am thinking of, the one on the resonator after the cone filter. I used a rubber pipe cap in the plumbing department from the hardware store. I think the 1-1/2 inch size. If this is the resonator I am thinking of, you should just make your own upper intake, cost me $12 and works great.
