Rear brake groan

I have rear brake groan on initial backup of the day. I have replaced all pads with OEM to no avail. I just found out that Nissan has a service bulletin about this exact problem. The TSB # is NTB99031 and the NHTSA # is SB604997.Does anyone have any information on the Nissan fix? Any way to find out more about these SB's? Anyone solve this annoying problem?

Thanks, John

uhm, what does the bulletin say?

I know there are a few problems back there: siezed e-brake cables and the clips on the rear brakes should be replaced with the newer ones, as they hold the pads farther away....

I have a funny little noise when the car is OFF and STOPPED as a result of these new clips...it's not a problem, just kinda goofy.

I can't find what the fix on the bulletin is. The bulletin states that there is a rear brake groan or hum after brakes are released at speeds below 5mph. Anyone know how to find the entire bulletin recommendation without paying Alldata $25.00 for a membership?

Rear Brake Rumble

I have the same condition with my 96. I had checked everything back there and convinced myself there was no mechanical or safety issue. The rumble will drive you crazy if you are not aware of the tech bulletin. Now that I know the source of the rumble I'm satisfied and not concerned.

NTB99-031A

Brakes - Rear Noise (Groan/Humming) After Brake Release
Classification:
BR99-002A

Reference:
NTB99-031A

Date:
May 14, 1999

Subject:
1995-99 MAXIMA REAR BRAKE GROAN/HUMMING NOISE AFTER RELEASING BRAKE PEDAL

This amended version of NTB99-031 adds Claims Information for the installation of rear brakes pad retainers. Please discard all paper copies of NTB99-031.

APPLIED VEHICLES:
1995-99 Maxima

SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 1995 to 1999 Maxima vehicle exhibits a groan or humming noise from the rear of the vehicle after releasing the brake pedal and moving forward slowly at approximately 5 mph (8 kph), use the procedures in this bulletin to repair it.

The incident may be intermittent and may be duplicated by releasing the brake pedal while the vehicle is stopped and then moving forward at approximately 5 mph (8 kph).

This incident can be caused by a slight tension on the parking brake cable resulting in the brake pads not withdrawing completely from the surface of the rotors after release of the brake pedal. This contact results in a low frequency groan or humming noise.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Verify that the noise identified by the customer is from the rear brakes and occurs under the conditions described above.

2. If the noise occurs as above, replace the parking brake cables and rear pad retainers with the parts listed in the Parts Information table.

3. Check and readjust the parking brake cable in accordance with the Brake System (BR) Section, PARKING BRAKE CONTROL - Adjustment, of the Service Manual.
