Reuters Business Report
Nissan, Chrysler, Hyundai Recall Vehicles

DETROIT (Reuters) - U.S. auto safety officials said on Tuesday that Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. (Tokyo:7201.T - News) would recall 161,000 cars to fix an electrical part that could start a fire.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said a diode used in alternators on 1997 Nissan Maxima, Infiniti I30 and Q45 sedans could have been damaged during production. If the diode fails, it could create a short circuit and possibly a fire.

NHTSA also said DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler arm (NYSECX - News; XETRACXGn.DE - News) would recall 97,000 1997 Dodge Ram diesel pickups to fix a throttle part that can corrode and stick, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will also recall 77,000 2001 Chrysler PT Cruisers to fix a child seat anchor that doesn't conform to NHTSA standards.

Hyundai Motor Co. (KSE:05380.KS - News) will recall 34,000 Accent hatchbacks to reinforce the passenger's roof pillar, which failed to meet NHTSA's standards for crashworthiness

the link is in my original post

the recall is recent.

So either the dealer lied or is uneducated.

I have an automotive news section on my yahoo and it was there. It is a an official press release.

It said 1997 maxima, i30, and q45 read the release.

The recall only applies to certain models built within a batch. Generally in a recall, the manufacturer sends mailed notices to the owners. So if you get a recall notice, you get the free repair. If you don't get anything in the mail, cross your fingers that your alternator won't die soon.

Does this have anything to do with the ignition fuse? Mine kept blowing so I spent coutless hours trying to fix it. It was ok for the last 3 weeks but it might happen again.
Thanks,
Paul

Looks like a bunch of us will be getting recall letters in August and new alternators! I think i may go buy a fire extinguisher and put it in my max just in case.

When you reregistered your vehicle, the address should have been transferred as well.

The list also shows this problem occurs for 1998 Maximas.

What are the chances of Nissan reimbursing those of us who have already replaced the alternator?

This recall must have included my car. My alternator did catch fire. I'm glad I had my extinguisher handy.
I guess I am one of those who will just have to miss out on a free alternator.

I'm curious, maybe you know or not? My alternator did catch fire and I replaced it about 1 year ago. I still have the receipt for the replacement. Should or Will Nissan reimburse me for the part/labor?

BTW: I have a 97' Maxima SE 5-speed

Re: Recall For 1997 Maxima

so, what the he!! can we do? do we have to wait until august to receive the new alternator? i don't feel like that! plus, i am taking my car to the poconos for a week, then going to canada one week later. what if my car catches fire then? and also, are the dealers responsible to replace the alternator? i hope so

Shouldn't matter...usually dealers go by VINs, not who owns the car.
In this case, they have the 161K VINs, if you have one of those VINs,
you get a free alternator! BUT, you might not get the mailed notification to take your car in.

If you call Nissan's 800#, then I think you can "register" your car with them. I did that a number of months ago.

hope this helps!

Well if your the second owner of your Maxima, and took your car to a Nissan dealer recently, you should be registered with them, and if car is one of them then you should get a notification...i think. But I wonder if I were to get a notification for the recall, and go to an Infinity dealer, would i get the same quality job if i were to take it to a Nissan dealer or recieve a better job? Hmmm some things make you go hmmm.

Eventhough I had a 5th gen maxima for about 6 months and have a BMW now. When I noticed the news I thought it would help posting the information.

I know how the dealers are (worked for one back in the day) and they don't care about the people that keep them in business and try to give the runaround as long as they can.

However if you have the facts and documents to back it they usually will do what they can unless they are really sleezy and still lie when you show them.

Good Luck to all of you effected by this recall and don't take know for an answer and call the corporate headquarters if you have to.

True! Lucky for me mine went just before 60K miles and no cost.

Now this just in time to have the belts I just bought put on. Good timing! (looking at the bright side)
