Those things are kinds slow

3.4L
175hp @ 5200 rpm
205ft-lbs. @ 4000 rpm
3091lbs

I only raced it once, some buff mean looking dude in shades pulled up to me at light and smirked at me. I rolled the window down and saw some chick sitting next to him(laying back). I didn't want to embarass him in front of her so I said **** it, then he reved his engine. He punches it a little spin, I push it 1/2 way so I don't spin out at 3000rpm I floor it too. Well by the next block I had to take a left so I slowed down and this POS flips me the bird...

Quick, but not fast

If you had a Maxima with only a couple mods (CAI, exhaust) you could definitely take it. It may be close if you have an automatic tranny but nontheless you should be able to take it...good luck and tek him when you have the chance.

Those things are slow as *****!! If it was the supercharged GTP(or is that the grand prix?) it would be different. Nonetheless, they are still slow.

Grand Am owner

Having raced a 4th gen Maxima I have to say it would depend on the drivers of the cars, cause the cars are evenly matched. But it's close regardless he only beat me by a half car length at best, but a win is a win. Just wanted to clear this up a bit in that I own a '99 GAGT that was stock when I raced the maxima (he had a manual which is a bonus in my book, but a good race none the less.)

'99 GAGT
3.4L
175hp @ 5200 rpm
205ft-lbs. @ 4000 rpm
3091lbs

'96 Maxima GLE
3.0 Liter
190 hp @ 5,600 rpm
205 ft-lbs @ 4,000 rpm
Automatic transmission 3063 lbs

Pretty even matchup with only a 15hp difference.

So in short it's gonna come down to the driver of the vehicles and the launch. Race him and post the results.

Grand Am GT Owner (as well)

Just an FYI to all. As with Maximas not every GT you come across is Stock or lightly mod'd. There are a few Supercharged ones out there. Mine being one of them.

This is my original play car(1999 GAGT). It's almost finished with it then the $$$ goes into the Maxima(just bought).....I'll post pics soon.

What are you guys running with those SC'd 3.4s? I'm assuming you guys are very comparable with the stock and modded GTPs seeing that your cars are significantly lighter. What's the SC kit cost?

My only hang up with the current Pontiac nameplate is the body cladding, wings, gills, louvers, etc you'll find on every Pontiac. Now that Bob Lutz took over, Pontiac is gonna have some sweet rides and designs. I've seen pics of the new Grand Am, GTP, and Bonneville and the cars look very aggressive and CLEAN.

Don't forget the return of the GTO next year

Believe it or not I was actually close to owning a '99-'02 Grand Am GT but since my brother offered me his Max SE, it was Maxima for me hands down and I just had to have it. I've come up against a few GA-GT's now and them, and even though I'm running stock for now, they were good races but the 3.4L or the GA itself can't match the smoothness & reliability of our Max's & the VQ.

Thanks Guys.

They claim to bring the car to 250-260hp. The only thing that lacks is the tranny can't handle it. Mine goes in next month to be completely rebuilt to handle the S/C and Stage 3 Motor Mods. Then I'll take it to the track and let everyone know the results.

I don't know how many of you ventured into the photo album, but here are some pics of the outside of the car:
Front

Passenger Side

Back Passenger

Last Pontiac Pics on this board I promise.

That is a clean setup..put the stock rims on that and you are a super sleeper...

I was going to say some smartass thing like "Enjoy your stay in the service department." but if you beefup the transaxle..then hush my mouth.

BTW I own a 1972 pontiac grand prix(go pontiac)...I mean Maxima's rule>!...

Very nice, however I think I still prefer the long, buff looks of the GTP.

Do the GTP's suffer from the same tranny problems?

No their Transmission is rated to handle a heck of alot more power. Kinda depressing for GA owners, but that problem will soon be fixed with my upgrade.

Grand am

I raced grand am gt (99 or 2000 model) with my 95se max auto with 2 people in my car, and I took off from about a second gear. Grand am also had 2 people. Don't know about anyone else, but taking off maxs first gear (auto) acceleration isn't all that great. Anyone know any mods on how to make the launch quicker. Thanks.

when i was car shopping, one of the cars i considered was a 99 two-door pontiac grand am, with the ram air and everything....i was actually going to buy it, but then i remembered 2 things: 1, my insurance would go through the roof, and 2, domestics suck. Seriously tho, that's a hot car, but i needed reliability.

As far as racing them: A friend of mine has a 99 GT with an intake and exhaust, and he couldn't keep up. Off the line, we were side by side, but then i pulled away from him, and was like 1 - 1 1/2 car lengths ahead of him, and it wasn't even like i was stomping onthe gas or anything.

The chief tester for the Toronto Star did a roadtest a couple of weeks ago on the Grand Prix (GTP included). This was a sponsored test by GM for auto writers. He basically tore the car apart - from terrible brakes to rattles to transmission shift quality to being not-so-quick. This is a guy who always praised GM's auto trannies & the "venerable" 3.8 OHV. This time around he called the engine "old" & stated that GM listed the Accord & Maxima as it's competitors. His answer was "Not a chance".

I to owned owned a Grand Am GT (1996) Good car, just a lot of reliability problems. I had a couple of Mods (CAI,dual exhaust, etc.) and to tell u the truth, my car had great pick up, but once the it hit 80 -90 mph, the power would diminish. I've raced a couple of 3.4L myself (i owning a 3.1L) and pretty much stood next to them. Haven't raced it with my max though. I loved my GAGT, but at the end, the tranny couldn't handle my driving (blew 2x's).

BTW GTManic, r u from GMPowertalk.com boards, I think i've seen u there. I used to post there before, but no more GAGT.

I have raced two black new GT grand ams when my 96 auto max was stock, you will have no problem, once second gear hits you will begin to pull away unless you need routine maintanance on your max

I was about to get a bad *** 2-door GAGT loaded, black on black leather, sunroof, everything. But then i saw the Max, 4-door (what i really wanted, i dont like the 4-door GAGTs) and it was STICK!

Their not slow by any means, they can handle themselves. I raced my Max when it was stock against a new 4-door one. Obviously i beat it easily, but im a 5sp, to their Auto, an Auto Max and GAGT would be a niiice race, their mid 15 sec cars... so beware....

But yes, their trannys SUCK when adding some major power...(I.E. Nitrous, SC, Turbo, etc) they cant handle it, i did quite a bit of research on them along with the SVT Contour, but felt the Max was going to be the most reliable and quickest...

yeah, reliability is a big issue with that GA's. Mine gave me a great deal of problems. I hear though that the newer models are more reliable though. I've only heard though
