Ground Control coilovers quick question

I found 3 part numbers for the Ground Control coilovers for my Maixma. The part numbers are different, depending on which struts/shocks they get paired up with.

GC coilovers for Tokico - part# 6055.01
GC coilovers for KYB - part# 6055.02
GC coilovers for Koni - part# 6055.03

Now, if I have Koni strut/shocks, would I be able to use 6055.02 GC coilovers, etc or would I HEV to get the specific part # of GC coilovers, that correspond to the strut/shocks that I have?

Thanks.

I'm not really sure the answer to the question. For what it's worth, when I ordered my GC coilovers, I never specified what shock I was going to be using with them. This may be a new thing that ground control just came out with though because I did have to modify my KYB AGX to fit the GCs on them. Now I sold the coilovers for Sprint Springs, but I just thought I'd throw this in since no one replied.

there's a separate sleeve included depending on the shock that is being used. If you have Konis, get the .03

I will be getting the KYB AGX so I will need the .02 GC kit.

But after talking to a couple of shops, it seems like there are serious issues with coilovers in general that make it more of a hassle than anything else. I was told that there is sometimes some play at the top of the coilover sleeve and over time the rattling gets worse and worse and the metal gets corroded from the repeated rubbing due to the play.

Have any of you coilover guys experienced issues with this? A friend of mine had struts/springs and then went to coilovers and then back to struts/springs because he was dissatisfied with the coilovers.

My main reason for getting suspension is because when I'm at the track I have a LOT of wheelhop off the line. The front end lifts and back end dips a bit and it is really difficult to get traction. Would coilovers be my best solution or would the Eibach Pro kit do the job just as well?

Thanks.

Well... YMMV, but I've been using GC coilovers with Tokico Illuminas for several years on my auto-x car with no rubbing or noise, and I adjust the height once a month for auto-x. Cheaper brands of coilovers may not be made to quite the same tolerances as other brand name equipment, but I don't have any experience with any other brands.

As far as for track use, if you get the GC setup, they used to have different sets for street, road course, or drag (different spring rates). The drag set up for FWD cars used pretty stiff rear springs, and the ride was pretty brutal on the street. If you get the coilovers, you may be able to raise up the rears and drop the fronts to keep as much weight on the fronts as you can, then reset everything to street settings for the drive home. It will probably be more livable than trying to make the drag springs streetable.

Hope this helps,

Hmmm I didn't see any mention of street/road/drag. All they have is the different part numbers depending on the struts/shocks that you have on the car.

6055.01 if you have Tokico
6055.02 if you have KYB
6055.03 if you have Koni

Now if I am planning on getting KYB would I be able to use the 6055.01 GC coilovers? The reason I ask is because I have a good deal on a set waiting for me.

Hey Phoung,

Is this something new? I remember back when I got my GCs, I didn't have to specify which shock I was going to be using. I did have to modify my AGX to fit the sleeve, but that was in the directions. I have Sprint springs now anyway, but I was just curious.

I ordered my GC coilovers probably around four years agos from a friend's shop, and he asked which spring rate I wanted out of those three choices. They probably don't offer those choices of spring rates anymore. Either that, or they may not offer them for the Maxima.

I didn't order the parts by parts # myself, so I don't know if there were different choices for the shocks. Back then, the hot ticket was the GC coilovers with Koni d/a. I couldn't afford it, so I went with the Tokico Illuminas.

There are probably minor fitment differences between the model #'s specific to the shocks. My best guess would be to go with whatever part # they say will work with that shock.

Hope this helps,

Maybe I shouldn't get coilovers at all? Recently I'm hearing a lot of negative things about coilovers and the problems it has in everyday driving... also they apparently do not perform much better than say a good spring kit like the Eibach Pro kit.

What do you think?

depends on what you want/need them for. if you have such misgivings and don't need the adjustability, then you would probably feel better and save some $$$ by going with just springs.

What car do you drive? Reason i ask is, if you have a maxima, how did you get the Illuminas four years ago? You can't get them now....

Wasn't for the Max. I haven't been really following up on what's out there, so I don't even know if Illuminas are made anymore, but I liked them at the time.

Primarily I want them for getting better launches at the track because I CANNOT get any traction off the line. I am running 15.1 bone stock with absolutely no traction off the line. I should be running 14.8 - 14.9 and I am hoping that stiffer suspension will help. KYB AGX will be going along with either Eibach Pro or GC coilovers.

But I'm hearing a lot of negative about the coilovers in general. It seems like that the Eibach Pro kit would be just as good and will not give me the daliy problems of a coilover kit.

No, GC has always had sleeves for different brand shocks. When a new shock comes out it does take some time before they have a new adapter sleeve available, though.
