Idle problem need help

ok I have a 96 max 5 speed 102000 miles
when I start the car it idles around 500rpm. When I rev the motor
and it drops it just stalls. Always stalls when I come to a stop.
I tested the computer and no codes.
I cleaned the air filter and changed the fuel fitler.
The only new mod I have done lately is the home made short arm intake
I did some searching and it said it could be the IACV. But I have no code for this.
Any help would be great

probable fix

If you clean the throttle body and the IACV, your problem with the idle will probably be fixed.

Re: Idle problem need help

I am almost certain you have an intake leak somewhere. I have had the same symptoms twice in the past (to varying degrees) and both times, the problem went away with find the leak and fixing it. It may be a crack in a hose, a leaking manifold gasket, a bad seal in your homemade intake, failure to connect a hose, etc. Examine your intake/manifold system carefully and find that leak!

its most likely your IACV HOSE, or your TB needs cleaning.....make sure the hoses are all AIR tight w/no way of coming out.....also clean out your throttle body.....i had the same exact problem, and i cleaned out the TB and retightened the hoses, did both during the same day, so i dont kno which fixed her up

I checked for air leaks and was none
I cleaned the TB and it was dirty
It idles better but one thing I turned on the A/C and it started
happening again rev the motor and when the needle drops it almost dies

One other thing I did the haynes manel test for the iacv
and it said to test measure the resistance between the connections
1&2,2&3,3&4,5&6 and the 3&4 connections had nothing could this be it
( I have no codes triping)
thanks for the help

another idea

It idles better but one thing I turned on the A/C and it started happening again
On the bottom of page 6-17 of the Haynes manual they discuss the "fast idle control solenoid" which is supposed to increase the idle speed when the power steering is operated or the AC is activated. This could be part of your problem.

Definitely clean your IACV first before you buy a new one. Search for directions because I got directions here but I don't remember the thread. Basically you get it off. Then you take it apart and clean it and then reassemble it. After I cleaned mine the idle was perfect.

I took it off and cleaned it
could not find any directions so I took the gold circle cover off
cleaned under that, cleaned all around the idle screw area
and I put it back on and it is still doing it
I am starting to think it is bad
any thoughts

ask parts guy at Nissan

If you have a Nissan dealer near, you might ask the parts guy if there is a way you can check your old part before you buy a new one. Sometimes the parts person can be very helpful.

You described cleaning the "fast idle control solenoid". Did you remove and clean the IACV as well?

I double check the haynes manual and it said to check resistance between 1&2,2&3, 4&5, 5&6. so there shouldn't be anything between 3 and 4.

sorry was in a hurry when I wrote that
I took the iacv off the car
and cleaned it there was a gold cover with 3 screws I removed it and cleaned under that also.
After reinstalling the iacv the problem is still there
I did the power steering and a/c test
and the a/c did not do so well, when I turn the a/c on it idles at
600rpm and when I rev the motor and the needle comes back down it goes to 200rpm and almost stalls.
My guess is that it is the fast idle control solenoid for a/c

So I have to buy the IACV I called nissan and they said 197.00

any thoughts

might wait

After cleaning the componets, you might drive the Max for a few days to see if the ECU adjusts............ I don't know that it will make a difference but it might. Maybe a member who knows better can offer some advice.

Thanks for link on where to buy it at.
I bought the IACV and 6 plugs for less than what my local nissan
wanted for just the IACV.
Thanks for all the help

I second this motion, after my JWT Pop/Ch mod my rpm idle was lower too, but later i realized 2 clamps were completely loose.. so just verify anything u might have overlooked
