Starting problem

My 96 start most of the time on a 2,3,or 4 self. Is my starter going bad? My 95 had a similer problem but the car wont start at all in that case. What could be wrong? help!

When trying to start the car, do you hear a clicking sound every time u turn the key? If so, you have a sticky icky solenoid... probably have to replace the starter. I heard its not that hard replacing it yourself... if you search around i remember seeing a really cool link that shows u exactly how to replace ure starter by ureself and it didn't seem hard at all. good luck

Thanks for the advice. I did change the fuel filter and the now it is starting on the first self. The old filter was clean but not sure why it was causing my car to not crak on first try.

I actually had this problem with my old '95 GLE. I bought a new starter from AutoZone and my dad and I replaced it in about 2 hours in the freezing winter cold. We used the Chilton's and my dad's mechanical skill and everything worked out fine (my dad used to own an old Porsche 912 and he rebuilt the engine by himself).

haha how do you know the old filter was clean? it seems to me if you replaced it, and that alleviated the problem, that means your old filter was in fact dirty

basically if its clogged, your engine does not get enough fuel on start up, and cannot "catch". you need to crank a few times to get enough fuel into the engine to finally start it up.

I blew the filter from out side and the only thing came out was clear gas. I had done this before with my other car and at that time the dirt came out with the gas.

I do get the light on the dash but no crank.Atleast not on first try. But now I am getting the crank on the first try after I replaced the fuel filter.

the problem is back but not that frequent. I noticed that if I leave the key in On position for a while, the chances are better that it will start. Not sure what is the reason.

That may have something to do with the fuel pump having a longer time to pressurize the system before start. If you just turn the key to the on position, do you hear the fuel pump kick on? If not, I'd start looking at that switch and what it interacts with.

When you say the engine cranks, do you mean it starts running or it starts to turn over. If there is a delay in anything happening after you first move the switch to the On position, there is something electrical going on with the switch or one of the components it interacts with.
