When trying to start the car, do you hear a clicking sound every time u turn the key? If so, you have a sticky icky solenoid... probably have to replace the starter. I heard its not that hard replacing it yourself... if you search around i remember seeing a really cool link that shows u exactly how to replace ure starter by ureself and it didn't seem hard at all. good luck

Thanks for the advice. I did change the fuel filter and the now it is starting on the first self. The old filter was clean but not sure why it was causing my car to not crak on first try.

basically if its clogged, your engine does not get enough fuel on start up, and cannot "catch". you need to crank a few times to get enough fuel into the engine to finally start it up.

the problem is back but not that frequent. I noticed that if I leave the key in On position for a while, the chances are better that it will start. Not sure what is the reason.

When you say the engine cranks, do you mean it starts running or it starts to turn over. If there is a delay in anything happening after you first move the switch to the On position, there is something electrical going on with the switch or one of the components it interacts with.
