Keep your ear to the ground. You might find a guy who has a similar Maxima (but with 5-speed) and he just got married, and his wife can't drive stick, etc. You can work out a swap...

Hey now

whoa... take it easy on us auto guys

true the maxima is faster in manual but you bought an auto .. no biggie ..
i like my auto.. manual will come later..
Dont' bother doin a conversion to 5spd it's not worth it..

if your's car's a 98 i wouldn't worry bout the tranny too much.. it's still got a while..
just don't do any burnout..or neutral drop.. these are BAD..!!!

if you want some tranny work done go to level 10 ...

I've got the '98 SE with the Stillen S/C installed...I just put the O/D override on and it takes off better...Leaving the overdrive on makes the trans go into a big pause before the power is applied...
I agree that a stick would be alot better but my original decision 3 yrs ago was to let the wife drive it too. So far my wife drove it only 2 times so far! LOL!

Swap out the valve body in your tranny with a modified one. Runs about $450, makes the auto shifts much firmer. It also is supposed to extend the life of the tranny by reducing slippage. Do a search for VB Mods and you'll find Don's e-mail address.

Yeah the Maxima automatic completely stinks. Shifts are not very smooth, and the powerbands are so poorly spread out. But I've learned to live with it.

BTW, Don's email is dgcoop@swbell.net (I think). However, the VB mod will not be available until January as Don is going to sell his products over the website only from now on.

You'll get used to it. There's three reasons why I got an auto:
1. Because my wife can't drive a stick
2. 4th gen Maxima's are already a rare find around here
especially a 5spd
3. The military life forces me to have to drive 3000 miles
two ways in order to see my family, so having an auto
really helps out there.

I like my auto, it can be very helpfull when in traffic or talking on a celly. But sometimes I get bored with it, so my next car will be a 5-speed, especially if it's gonna be a BMW

Actually I've been e-mailing Don this week and the VB Mod is available still but only to those ppl who didn't flame him the other day. Its $450.00 US but it would cost me about $700 Cdn. I'll have to wait until next Spring to dig up the funds.

my 95 max se auto

has never dissapointed me.. I drove other 95se manuals, and opted for this one for a couple reasons... first of all it had a little less miles and stuff like that, but the manuals really didnt seem to awful different. The auto shifts reallly well I thought and leaves a lot of sportiness in it - honestly the manual didn't feel too different when I was driving it... also a auto is much nicer on dates, when trying to talk on phone and write at same time, etc. Yes there are sometimes when I would DEFINATELY rather have a manual, and my next car might be a manual, but he maxima manual didnt feel too awful different, so maybe a m3 thats my opinion

Automatic horrible? Now you know? I hear you man, it stinks. My next car will also have to be a manual. BMW? HA! My next car: Porsches, Ferrari, or Lambo. Ok let me get back to reality. Not sure what will my next car be. Manual it will be though!

Seems that the manuals really get the power applied to the wheels alot more efficiently. I raced my buddy's 97 SE auto in my 95 GXE 5 speed and beat him by several car lengths o-120. Autos seem like they need to spool up to get power. The 5 speed starts move at just over 2000rpm. In fact it's hard to leave the line with hard throotle b/c the tires just spin...

can you eat a soft taco while you drive a stick? I dont think so. I would love to have a stick, but a auto has its perks

Automatics in general will be less efficient than 5 speeds:

At lower RPMs, the coupling is a viscous fluid mode rather than a mechanical link... So efficiency and torque does drop out...

Well, if you compare the Maxima's automatic with an automatic from Toyota (like in the Camry) you'll see how a GOOD automatic feels like. Toyota's is smooth, has good gear ratios, and shifts imperceptibly. Nissan's is harsh, has horrible powerband gaps, and each time it shifts it shakes the car.
