Giving the Kill, but feeling the Fate!
2 Races, so far in my 4th Gen Life. Had the GLE max for 3 months now, starting to explore it a bit more.
Race 1. 1998 Maxima GLE (me) vs 2002 Nissan Altima
I was on the Atlantic City Expressway a couple weeks ago when I faced off with this Altima when I was going to the Hot Import Nights show. We lined up at a light, and he reved the engine. We both went WOT and off we are, at about 4000 rpm I gazad a way from this guy. Just seems like something grabbed me and gave me a big push. So Im at about 80mph now and im about 6 car lenghts ahead of this guy. I look back and I see him mad while hes sittin in his car with his girl, Poor guy. So what does he do? As I slow down he races way past me of course, so he doesnt walk out a sore loser. But still in my books, hes a SORE LOSER lol. Shoulve known the Altima is a good car, but just doesnt quite CLINCE the win like the Max
Race 2. 1998 Maxima GLE vs 2002 Acura RSX (6 Speed)
Here I am walkin in this race against my brother driving his girls car, and I had some confidence that I could at least keep up with him. heh, as we said go that got damn car took off like a jack rabbit and im here goin WOT and just about 10 car lenghts behind the car. Got da*n, what was I thinking?
Anyone kow of any ways to manualy shift an Auto, when Racing? To have a better outcome? I would really appreciate it!
BTW, i have a High Flow Intake and Exhaust Tip, No pipping yet. Anyone know where I can find that guy that sells that pipe that goes to the Intake? I would really appreciate it!
Thanx
Nick

a lot of people ask the question about manually shifting the auto...most people say that it doesn't make a difference. some say it has a little difference but then again maybe they're just driving better...so my opinion is leave it in D and it's fine.

Hahah, funny sig...
Anyways, when you line up, drop your shifter into 1, turn off OD, push the brake hard, and rev that SOB to 2000 RPMs, then when you get the go signal, let go of the brake, and floor it, and then let your engine rev somewhere around 6000 somewhere near the redline (cant remember the RPMs), and push the shifter into 2 (try not to miss 2, like me) then shift somewhere near that nice redline....and then into D, and whenever the engine is near that sweet spot again, press the OD button......

i've tried it and you get a hella bomb a$$ start, but it's bad for your brakes. I've also heard to stay in neutral and rev to 2000 then miss D and go to 2, then stay till about 30mph, then to drive...overdrive is always off. I haven't tried that second one but skipping D will work because the lag. Although it seems a lil too unsafe with me.
As with anything, practice and get the juice out of that max..TO THE MAX!
Why do people say that manually shifting an automatic makes a difference?
I can get my rpm's to redline in my 98 SE. Plus, the only difference have an automatic makes is slower shifts and how the car engages the gears and you just can't get past that.

I was down in Atlantic City for HIN. I was driving around looking for someone to race but noone wanted to play. I really wanted some stickered out honda to pull up next to me, but I never got the pleasure of racing (smokin') one. Oh well, I did get a thrill on my way back to NY when I beat a 330Ci (3 people in my car). BTW, how'd you like the show? Wish some more maxima's came out and represented. Props to the ones that did come out. There was 3 4th gens, 1 5th gen and 1 3rd gen as opposed to like 500 hondas and integras.

Best bet is to keep it in Drive, and pop over-drive off.
When manually shifting, it still takes the ECU at least one second to actually complete the shift when you pop it into a higher gear. Also, your gauges are not wrong. It is VERY rare for you to EVER redline when in Drive, but sometimes for some odd reason, you can. Usually it will shift at about 6300 RPMs.
But after some DYNO tests and experimentation, your best bet is to keep it in Drive and kick the over-drive off.

Re: Giving the Kill, but feeling the Fate!
Yup. Definitely a 2.5 since you had it beat by "6 car lengths". Still seems a bit too much, IMO. I raced a 2.5 last Saturday and he kinda kept up. I only had him by about 1 car length (if that). Then again, we took off from about 60 - 100. and my car's mileage is getting up there. (almost 90K on my auto 97SE)
That actually kind of had me worried. I thought I might beat him by more. Any thoughts?

auto 2.5's run high 16's.....as high as 17 maybe.....now...you have mr. auto maxima, running roughly 15.7......you have mr auto slow-tima 2.5 running 17....almost a second and a half....thats a good amount of cars

Yeah the show was pretty hot. They even had a 2nd Gen Maxima there with Hydrolics and some little gold rims on it. It was hot though, I loved the Interior how they used that red and white fabric. But the Hottest was the Silver Maxima. That had the black 18' Racing Rims on it. Stillen kit and all. It was definantly my fav Max there!
