Help! High idle . . .

My car (96 GXE Auto) will at random times decide to idle at about 1500 RPM when I put it in Neutral or Park. This occurs even when the engine is at full operating temp and I've been driving for a while. I found that if I tap the pedal lightly and bring it up to about 2000 RPM, it will drop back to a more normal 800. It idles normally when put into Drive (abt 600-700 RPM).

I cleaned the throttle body recently, and I checked both throttle cables.

Anybody have any idea what this is?

Thanks.

You checked the cables, how were they? Sounds like they may be to tight or binding up on something. Is the spring that holds the throttle plate closed nice and strong?

Another thing to check or clean is the IAC valve. Quite a few on here had similar simptoms after cleaning the TB. Taking the IAC valve out and spraying that clean with TB cleaner seems to fix it. I think the valve gets hung up and this is the reason for the high idles.
