Does the brand of gas matter?

Does the brand of gas matter?
I searched gas and brand, but found nothing relevant. I think this will be interesting: What brand of gas do you use for your max and why? Why does "bob's" gas station sell premium for $1.80 while across the street Shell sells premium for $1.99. What's up with gas prices too, they recently went up again.
I heard that shell is the best because they control the most oil rigs. But people can talk, I want evidence. People should know what they are putting into their cars before paying 2 bux a gallon

well....i don't know a true real answer for you but i have a short tale for you.
i used to own a pretty sweet 89 plymouth voyager...one day it started jerking all funny and then started stalling on me. this was no good. i soon brought it to my mechanic and he told me i had really crappy gas that got water in my fuel pump, or something along those lines. so lesson, never buy stop n shop gas or the cheaper stuff. you still can if you'd like but i don't want to risk it. for my max, i use 93/94 at mobil when they have 8 cents off mondays. i actually just switched from using 89 and my mileage has improved significantly. yes

Damn you California...unfortunately, the highest is 91 octane here If I fill my car with 87 octane, will I get better gas mileage than if I had a tank full of 93 octane? I haven't really tested it, but I noticed that I get better gas mileage with 87 octane. I feel bad putting 87 in my car, but 91 is almost 2 bux a gallon.

I'm almost sure it depends on the station you go to. I had a Chevron gas station near my college, and I got the work gas mileage and performance ever.
The Chevron near my home, on the other hand, is great.

I try and buy gas only from stations that look newer
newer stations = newer tanks.
Who knows how old some of those tanks are (even though they have to be replaced every so many years).
Anyways, old tanks are no good, particles fall into the gas, etc.
For brands it's Mobil/Exxon or Chevron. My second choices are Shell and Texaco.
I steer clear of 76 (formerly Unocal which was OK, now Tosco which to me is liek Arco) or ARCO.
I buy 93 here in Texsa, but when I was in Cali I was on 91.
Here 93 costs ~$1.39

i always use sunoco, im sure it doesnt make a difference but i like to think it does. o and remember never fill up ur tank when u see a truck filling up the gas station, cuz while they are filling up the tank all the crap at the bottom is being stirred around and mixed up with all the gas like a milkshake, u gotta wait till it settles to the bottom

I was recently using 91 octane at Seven Eleven (1.55/gal.) but found that I wasn't getting the mileage I was getting before. I thought for sure there was something wrong with my car. However, I used to buy my gas at Hess (they only offer 93 octane for premium choice). I started using this gas again and now I am getting fantastic gas mileage, almost 400 miles on a full tank! It's either the gas or the higher octane....or perhaps a combination of the both. It works!

"Honestly from the analysis we do here at work I would say Texaco or Exxon/Mobil for general use. If you can still get Texaco clean system 3 or maybe even Chevron Techron, those are in my opinion the best for the higher octanes. However please be aware that you are almost never buying gasoline from who you think you are. All the gas stations sell fuel from whatever refinery or pipeline terminal is closest. A "branded" fuel like Texaco's clean system 3 adheres to the higher levels of detergency and stability required by Texaco. Most people buy the cheapest gas so that's what most companies produce-- gas that meets the minimum requirements.
"All fuels meet the minimum specs which are "agreed" upon by the OEMs (car manufacturers) and the oil companies. The OEMs and oil companies are always at war. Whenever alot of fuel injectors fail and are replaced the OEMs computer pick it up and they geographically localize the problem and find out who's fuel is predominant in the area and start asking us to do testing."
"So it's like this:
low octane doesn't matter as it all meets the minimum.
Mid-grade doesn't matter unless its branded (techron, Clean system 3, ect..)
High-grade is the same deal as mid-grade. It doesn't matter unless it's branded."
The reason why "Bob's" gas station is less expensive is that he purchases fuel on the spot market (i.e. no contract with big oil) and "Bob's" supplier treats that fuel to meet the minimum standards.

My Nissan mechanic told me that Nissan Corp. recommends Exxon premium. But, I really don't think it matters, just as long you use at least 91+ octane from "premium" gas stations. Stay away from "cheap" gas stations. More than likely, the cheap gas stations have terrible additives in their gasoline which our Max's hate.

I'm not a petroleum engineer, but I like to consider myself a fuel expert. I'm also a chevron advocate. If you want the answer right now, here you go.
CHEVRON is the best. Next to chevron, Exxon/Mobil is good too. On a tankful, driving only on highways, my car gets almost 50 more miles with chevron fuel than with Mobil/Exxon. But where I live, chevrons are very very rare, so I just use Mobil. And stay away from 7-11 fuel.

I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS use Sunoco 94 octane, and will drive out of my way to get it...Sometimes, I go to Pioneer for their 93 octane...a friend of mine is an engineer at a local refinery and he says that the gas that Pioneer sells is actually 94, but nationally they advertise as 93, so they do so here as well (Same refinery as the 94, apparently...I'll still go to Sunoco if I have a choice).

Actually I think you do not need to worry about the type of premium unleaded you purchase unless you do not run fuel injector cleaners regularly. ALL grades of gasoline have a federally mandated amount of detergents to keep your fuel system clean. Chevron claims their Supreme grade has more detergents than their regular and plus.
I have found little mileage or performance difference from the various gas stations I have used, and I've tried them all in California...Chevron, Shell, Arco, BP, 76, Texaco, Olympic, Valero, Exxon, Costco, and yes, even Rotten Robbies. Too bad super is only 91 octane now in California.
If anything, I like Chevron the best because I also trust their Techron Concentrate fuel system cleaner. But for some strange reason I get slightly worse gas mileage using Chevron. I run a bottle of Techron Concentrate every 10,000 miles or so.
As for crap on the bottom of old tanks, it's true, but remember that gas stations have in line fuel filters just like your car. At least that's what the tanker truck driver told me. And in case anyone is wondering, they really do mix the regular and premium to come up with the midgrade octane gasoline.

from here on out im using premium from mobil...now that i dont have to full up every 3 days (thank you knock sensor replacement) i think its worth the extra dollar or whatever it may cost to fill her up with some good stuff

chevron
first off, i want to say that everyone should steer clear of Valero gas stations if u care anything at all about your maxima! The worst, cheapest gas i've ever bought. I was on the road and the only station around was a valero....i got 250 miles out of a full tank on my 97 gle on the highway! I can usually get 350-450 miles out of a tank on the freeway depending on how fast i drive. I just recently switched to chevron gas and my maxima feels a bit smoother on acceleration...i think it's the techron stuff. I haven't used chevron for too long and so i don't notice much difference from 76 or shell gas but i like the smoothness of acceleration and i think it will only gt better with time. so again, another vote for chevron!

amoco ultimate premium gold...if i cant get an amoco i usually go with mobil super or exxon super..thats the only three i ever mess with...amoco gold has been my family's gas of choice for the last 20 years...and here by NY, there arent any chevron's, and BP is just Amoco everywhere...and 7/11 doesnt sell gas, its jus a convieniece store....by the way, do those gas additives craps help? i wanted to try chevron techron fuel system cleaner, hurd its the best in the category...opinions??

I have a question about octane. Around where I live, the higheset octane is 91. When I went to Europe last month, in Spain we walked by a gas station. Its premium gas was 98 octane. Is that the same scale or something, b/c it made me pee my pants . The lowest octane that it had was 95. This made me wonder b/c the lowest octane avaliable there was still higher than the highest I can buy. Does higher octane gas get higher mileage and does higher octane gas burn cleaner?

Either Shell or Chevron for me... never noticed a difference, although i hav efilled premium @ our Arco. I was once forced to put gas at a gas station nearby that's pretty nice and new... Gas N Go... sounds so mom/popish brand... but never noticed a difference. I guess like everyone says... chevron... shell... doesn't make a difference. Fill up and hope your luck holds!
