GI: Short Height Shifter for 5.5 gen
GI: Short Height Shifter for 5.5 gen
Hey guys, I'm still torn on whether I should sell this or not. I have taken a 6mt shifter assembly and shortened it by 1.75 inches. I have not touched the threads, I chopped out the middle piece and professionally tig welded the two ends together. I have also modified the reverse lockout by shortening it by the same amount and glueing it back together with special plastic adhesive. It does not come with a shift ****, but I do have the titanium shifter trim that goes around the boot that I will toss in for no extra charge. The shifter assy cost me 100 at the wreckers. Adding my time to do the work and shipping I would like to get 200 shipped for this item. It's big, it weighs more than you think and I am shipping from Toronto. If you don't like the price i don't want to hear about it in here.
You may have seen the thread when someone else did this to their car. Here are a few pics, there is no reason why this one will look any different. I cut the exact same amount from the shaft. I measured everything meticulously and it is exactly 1.7500 Inches shorter than stock.
This is not my car, or my install. I have not installed this. But it will look exactly like this when done.

I will post a few pics of the uninstalled piece in a few minutes.

Note the dowel holes still line up perfectly, and the shaft is dead nuts straight. Original length was somewhere around 7.5 inches.

Seems like a good idea. Would be cool if you could do a core charge or something so you pick up the assembly and once you send it to us and we send you our stock one back, you refund part of the money cause WTF are we gonna do with the normal one lol
ide be in for that and im sure some others would too
I'd like to do that, but I'm not sure if I can keep making these. Thanks to the economy my plant has laid off over 400 people. I used to do all my mods at work, and I have done a lot of side jobs like making short ram intakes and a few other things in the past. But now it's really hard to get permission to do this kind of stuff, even if it is on my own time. That and shipping cost would make it kind of iffy. Maybe in the summer when we are not being watched like hawks I might be able to get away with it.
I don't have a tig welder at home, or the ability to run one at my home. I still have **** and tube wiring in my house. I'll make some discreet inquiries at work to see if this would be possible for me to do.

Looks good knight, been thinking about how to shorten this shifter for a while... I'm close to you(Mississauga) and wouldn't mind meeting up to take a look and most likely pick it up. PM'd anyway
I wasn't expecting such a big response. I think it makes more sense to me to help out a local person who is interested at this time. Then neither of us has to worry about shipping. I will try to get his stocker and modify that one ASAP and then be ready to sell the next one. With me being in Canada and most of you in the US, a core charge is going to be hard to figure out because you guys will have to ship me your stock one in such a way that I don't have to pay customs on it. So basically you would have to value it as a gift under 20 bucks. I'm going to go weigh the one I have now and then figure out the smallest box it will go into safely with extra bubble wrap etc and check out prices for shipping and I'll see what I can work out for you guys.
Hey guys, I'm the one who bought it and went over to knight's place and we installed it too. Install is pretty straight forward, just the same as shifter bushings, plus removing the whole assembly which is just basically taking off the two linkages and pulling it out...
+1 knight for good seller and great craftsmanship on the whole assembly modded.
Just a review in case anyone was wondering...
So far it feels pretty good! A lot tighter than stock with more feel for sure. You really get a good feel for the gears now, kind of have to relearn my driving style and clutch release LOL. I do notice though with the shortened height that there is more effort to shift into gears, maybe that's why they put it so high stock? But the look is fantastic now too, way better than before! My hand sits on top of the **** more naturally now too...

I have another one of these ready to go. I only shortened this one by 1.5". Gave me a little more room for error. If anyone is interested shoot me a pm and we can work something out.

Here's the new one, original length of the shaft was just under 7.5" long to the white nylon piece, It is now just under 6". I have the dimensions written down at work but if memory serves, 7.48 and now 5.98. +/- .005 after the cut and weld.
200 shipped, you ship me back your core (your expense) and i'll refund 50
