50 Threatened Me
Mr. Officer pulled me over for a "California Roll" through a stop sign at 11:30pm and got smart with me when he approached the window and saw my monitor. I had the windows down, hands on the wheel, car off and license in hand. I don't know what else I could have done for him but he mouthed off to me about Nevada law prohibiting video screens within the driver's sight. I thought that I would say yes Mr. Officer and wait for him to return with the citation before I proceded with my questions about all the factory navigation screens and the 100,000kW Neon signs within view of all visitors to the strip. When I did ask he said that he can and has written tickets to people with Nav screens and that I should consult a lawyer with further questions before he did ticket me. My screen was on the CD player with no moving images at the time. Aftermarket single Din head units have more animation (Sony, Pioneer) so I was really baffled by his attitude. So what I learned was, make a complete stop and you can watch video's all day long .

Must have been the end of a really boring day too...or maybe the start of a really long night. Either way, when he said that and I played dumb and he kept ranting I decided I would keep my mouth shut and hope he didn't try and ticket me for it. So when he issued the citation (for something he and the rest of his cronies do all day) I politely asked for the reason and he just got more incensed when I brought up the stockers. He knew I caught him in his threat.
Anyway, screens can be legal for one important reason. Factory systems (and most correctly installed aftermarket systems) do not allow you to input new destinations while the vehicle is in motion and provide voice as a supplemement so you don't have to look at the screen.

my understanding is that if the screen is not being used as a function of the car (i.e. navigation, insrumentation) then its illegal. You would fall under this catagory. Why didn't you just turn it off when the officer pulled you over

In comparison, my dad's ES300 shows a brown screen with RDS information and CD Text along with other functions that I would say are equal to the information on my display. Does anyone know if the same law applies to these CD decks from Pioneer and Sony that have Screen Savers and other moving images?

Racial Profiling...
Don’t feel bad. I got stopped by three SWAT officers in riot gear in an unmarked car without radar heading the opposite direction. They tried to get me for doing 55 in a 45 and failure to use my signal. Yet, they had to turn around to get me at a stop light. When all was said and done, I asked them who they were REALLY after. They just smiled and told me to take it up with the City Attorney. Well, I did and the ticket was dismissed. Waste of time...
By the way: How do you get your headunit/remote to float like that???

bad time to forget. also, i dont' think you should automatically shut off the car and have liscence in hand until he asks you for it. maybe he wouldn't have asked for it.

I've never been stopped and not asked for my driver's license. Anyway, I was told my friend's dad (a cop) to do all that to make the officer as comfortable as possible.
Is that a joke? That picture is from Alpine's website.

the law states that a screen can only be used for navigational purposes if it is in plain sight of the driver. and also as long as your engine is shut off, your car is parked with the parking brakes on then it is ok to view a moview or what not on a screen. you should get the 50's badge number and report him for this.. man the last time a cop pulled me over he told me to show him what i got cuz he was curious.. he shined his flashlight to the back of the car and found 2 12" subs.. the cop was real nice and said "wow iw ish i had all these cool toys" wished me good luck on my final and sent me home without giving me a ticket for tint and stuff... sucka was nice... and even offered me an installer job at the police dept.. but i refused. hehehe. some cops are cool but the cranky ones bite.

That's been the case for me all the other times, especially when I had my Neon and nobody had monitors. I got pulled over one time and he radioed to his buddies and I had 4 cops checking it out, they liked the Nintendo cut out into the seatback the best. Those guys were cool. The one last night started rambling on about how these people play pornography up and down the strip without worrying about the children that can see it. But, like I said, he only gave me the ticket for the stop sign and not the monitor or my tinted windshield so it wasn't 100% bad.

i've seen your posts the last couple of days and it seems that they are all pretty antagonistic. I said what I do when I get pulled over as information. If you don't like it, that is ok, but it just seems that you are about as crabby as that cop was last night.
