another service story

i took my 2002 GLE in to fix a leaking sunroof. they seemed to have taken care of that ok, but get this....they drove the car for SIXTY EIGHT MILES!! that's what it says on the invoice, and i was particularly careful about watching the mileage on my car when i took it in because the last few times i took it in, i thought to myself that they drove it a few more miles than they should have. i even reset the trip computer when i pulled up to the garage this morning...

when i brought it up to the manager, he said it must have been a mistake...he didn't have much to say when i said that i reset the trip computer. i'm planning on calling nissan north america tomorrow and seeing what they have to say. habberstad nissan in huntington, long island. anyone else have an experience like this?

oh.. I know, I know...

they used it for the parts car all day. I've heard of this. Once, they spilled a battery in the trunk of someones new 5th gen. Battery acid everywhere. Carpet ruined, acid in the spare well.. know what they did? rinsed it out half-a$$ed like and said hear ya go.. not a mention of it. later when he called on the wet carpet and eye bleeding fumes, they had to fess up. I think he had them eventually replace the carpet and liner.

Consider yourself lucky, no door dings or chips.. or dents.. or worse.

some balance

Clearly the incidents reported here are bad and something should be done. But just to keep things in balance, I have only good things to say about my recent experiences with Stevens Creek Nissan (San Jose, CA). To be fair, they were less than spectacular in the past on my previous maxima. But the service manager I've been dealing with (Fred) for my last 3 visits (all recalls == accelarator pedal, transaxle, and 6speed clutch groan) has been very, very good. Granted 3 recalls in nearly the same number of months doesn't make me too excited about Nissan's quality. However Nissan is cleary making good service a priority as each time I go for service I get follow-up calls, etc. and a reminder about the survey in the mail. I believe these customer surveys are having a very positive impact.

Re: some balance

That's pretty bad. That's one of the reason why I wait for the car, whenever I can. They usually write "waiter" in big letters in your work order, so you know they make a distiction between you and whoever just drop-off the car. Of course, that doesn't give'em the right to use your ride and your gas to do their business-related trips or go out for lunch...

at least one good one

I have to jump in here and defend my local service manager...I have had to take my car there a couple of times, both for routine services, and he has been nothing but polite and helpful. He gets you in right away, and tries to accomodate you in every way possible. Also when I called him today to ask about wiring up the navigation system I am getting, he said he wasn't 100% sure, and he would look it up, to come see him in the A.M., and he would also copy the wiring diagram for me. I have heard the horror stories about Nissan's services /service people, and I have to admit I am lucky.

I bought my car from habberstad nissan, but only took it in for an oil change once. By the looks of the place, I would expect Habberstad to be the last place to ever do something like that, but then again, anything is possible.

Definetly put a call into NNA.

I've been reading these posts for months about the Nissan's horrible service. I was worried when I took my 2K2 in for the recalls. The dealer service was fantastic. Sorry to hear your about yours.

Hear this guys. I wanted to buy a e-brake retainer spring from one of my local dealers. [long story omitted]
One of the mechanics says that my rear caliper and piston are shot and that it's gonna be $800. He wanted to charge me $800 to replace perfectly fine brake components. I knew he was full of b u l l ****. The retainer spring popped out becuase I didnt secure it correctly after doing my own brakes. The **** mechanic kept insisting the spring popped out because the caliper and pistons were bad. He had no idea i'm a weekend DIY warrior. I'm in DC and there are lots of mainland korean international students around here, who are very rich and drive M3's, 330's, 2k2 Maximas , etc...
The mechanic thought I was one of them. He thought wrong. ******...

It's weird that they drove it all those miles , but put it on the invoice. If they wanted to go for a joyride, they should have hid it from you.

I always check the ODO, cause once I think my car was driven 50 miles.

Re: another service story

I *know* the service dept wouldn't do anything like this, but just-in-case, I always make sure to tell them the mileage and have them write it on the work order when I drop the car off, and ask if it needs to be driven before/during/after being fixed. If the answer is yes, I tell them to call me and I'll come down to go on the ride.

My last appointment (hood TSB) they drove it 0.2 miles, the one before that (transverse link) they drove it 0.2 miles. I think they drive it up and down the street behind the shop.

I'll live with 0.2 miles, but 68 is way to much. Did you at least get gas money?

Re: Re: another service story

yeah, you're right, it's a fairly big dealership, and it doesn't look shady at all. as much as i would be peeved about them driving my car 68 miles, it wouldn't be so bad if i knew it were gentle driving. but one time, when my car was roadtested for a whining noise, the technician, with me in the car, revved the engine to 5500 rpm pulling out of the lot. just makes me wonder what they did without me in the car. either way, hope that you have better experiences at that service department.

68 miles is A LOT of mileage, and for that, I'd definetly question it. Don't know if your familiar with the area, but I'd expect this more from places like smithtown nissan, westbury nissan or maybe even nissan 112. When I was waiting for an oil change at smithtown nissan last time, I saw them unloading a couple of new 2002 Altima SE's, and right after it came off the truck, this kid that works there, get's right in, and literally GUNS IT around the parking lot. He took it out for a cruise on the main road, and about 2 mins later when he came back, he comes flying into the parking lot again!

Kinda makes you wonder what they do to those cars the 1st few miles b4 you buy em.

Yeah, Smithtown Nissan absolutely su*** my scr*t*m!! They're a bunch of liars over there. They dented my car and won't fess up to it. The service managers pretend they know something about Maximas but they are clueless. I'd like to set up a post just about how much Smithtown Nissan su****. I've had much better luck with Mike at Nissan 112.

screw Smithtown and Westbury - they all seemed very SHADY to me - very.. I walked into Westbury before I purchased my car (months ago) and asked a salesperson for a price quote on a 2k2 SE, with NO options - the price I got? STARTING @ 27k, NO NEGOTIATIONS - what in the world is that? It's called highway robbery - they thought they could play me for a fool but they were wrong...

Another lengthy service story to share..

My 2k1 GLE now has around 10K miles, well at around 6900 miles during a routine oil change service they informed me that they will also be rotating the tires since it was about time and I think they wanted to charge me $15 but I told them that I would get it done at LesSchwab well the guy comes back and says we prefer that you get it done here and we will only charge you $5, so I said ok and after the service I drove off, well around 7500-8000 miles I started noticing that my front tires were getting extremely worn out!! i meant totally no tread left, concerned I looked at my warrantly book and surely the crappy OEM toyos have some sort of warranty and it said to go to a local toyo dealership which is ofcourse the leschwab so I went there and the guyz there told me the tires looked like they have never been rotated. the rear tires were in perfectly new shape. Leschwab told TOYO tires that it was due to negligence on my part. well furious I went to nissan service and told them and the girl there basically told me that tires are my problem and that nissan doesnt take care of THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I found the reciept for that service and surely the rotation is not listed on it but the $5 charge is! well i was ****ed. I mean i wouldve understood if it was negligence on my part then I would just live with it and would've gotten new tires. Well I went to the service manager and told him the story, he called toyo and told them that the tires were rotated, but I knew they hadnt been but hey if he can lie and get me new tires thats all good. Toyo asked for a reciept and the manager promised to fax him, I went home expecting a call from toyo well a month passed no answer meanwhile my max was having difficulty holding traction on wet roads and I was using my accord instead. Frustrated I called TOYO and stated my case once again. The girl had no knowledge of the claim and had recieved NO FAX. well I had had it and told her that I would call nissan customer service and tell them all about this (dont know if that would make any difference), she understood my position and told me to go to the leschwab and give her a call, well I did that and called her and she basically asked me what would make me happy! I told her that I am a fair person and repacing the only two tires would satisfy me, well she told me that since I was so patient and had to go through all that she would give me all four new tires free of charge. Well I am happy now with all four new tires (TOYO Proxes TPT) i have noticed that the ride is much better now and these tires have better grip than the OEM did when they were new. I am just disturbed about my local nissans service department. sorry for the lengthy message.

heh........I knew I'd open up a "can of worms" mentioning smithtown nissan.

I remember back almost 2 years ago when I was looking for the 2000 Max and the sales lady there tried selling me a 2000 GLE with more options than I wanted, it already had 5000 demo miles on it, the sticker price was $31,200 (or something like that) and she was willing to go down to $28,500.

Me: GET THE F*** OUTTA HERE!

This lady either had PMS that day or was really desperate for a sale because she kept haggling me, but there was nothing she had available that I was interested in, let alone, a price that we could work with. Finally, to be nice, I asked for her card, and she turned from desperate to downright rude by saying "well, I DON'T THINK YOU CAME IN HERE TODAY WITH INTENTIONS ON BUYING A CAR, I JUST THINK YOU CAME IN TO TEST DRIVE AND THAT'S WASTING MY TIME, SO IF DON'T MIND, PLEASE LEAVE!

Me and my friend: Doesn't matter, you and this dealership S**K anyway!

Sheesh! some people!! I'd stay away from Atlantic Automall nissan too.

Can you provide any details on how they fixed your sunroof? I've had mine in like four times already and I can still see daylight coming in through the seal. They even tried replacing the glass. No luck.

Re: Re: another service story

you probably know more about it than i do, as you have more experience with it. this was my first visit, and they just replaced my drip rail gasket...i didn't know what that was a first, but upon inspection, it seems to be a part that is on the inside of the car. it actually still leaks, but very minimally...like a drop or two if you just dump a whole bunch of water on there...i dont know if that is going to worsen, but i'm expecting to eventually take it in again. good luck with it!

In defense, I've had nothing but positive experiences with the Infiniti Dealership here in Charlotte, NC. They have a customer oriented service attitude and are on your side. I can put up with a lot if I know they are doing their best. I paid $1500 less for my I30 than a comparable GLE and got a better warranty (4 years and 60,000 miles plus loaners, they also wash car after they service it). I believe any dealership can do a good job if they want to, it all depends on their priorities.

This happens all the time. If they don’t use your car to pick up parts they use it to pick up lunch. When I had my 99 Altima they actually ate their lunch in my Alti while blasting the A/C. When I picked up my car there were rappers from their meal on the floor and the car smelled like an Italian deli. To make matters worse the next time I brought my car in for an oil change, when i picked it up that afternoon i drove the car home and while i was driving the car seemed to bounce up and down. When i would speed up it had gotten worse. So I decided to take my car to a family friend whom is a mechanic and he told me that all the tires had been flatted (This is caused by a high speed skid) so all four tires were ruined. So I went back to the dealer and told them that I will be contacting Nissan corporation and my lawyers and for some odd reason they replaced all four tires with my choice of brand and model. So since that day I always check my odometer and write it down so that these A-holes don’t try it again. I can say that it is not only Nissan all dealerships do this (Ford ,Chevy and the list goes on). It all depends on who owns the place.
