Non-dealers Performing Extended Warranty Work

Does anyone know whether you're required to take your Maxima to the dealer for extended warranty work? The dealers in my area (Fort Worth, TX) always try to do everything possible to deny that the part/work is not under warranty (especially if you request a two day rental car under the warranty). I'd like to find an independent mechanic to undertake any warranty claims in the future. Thanks for any help.
