How come i have a speed limiter????!!

Ok, after owning my 00'SE 5spd for almost 3 years i finally got her to terminal velocity, and the speed limiter bogged me down at 130mph!! I'm hella pi$$ed, because i was on a high speed freight train with a 5.0, TL, and a 850 on the hi-way. I have an early production SE which came with 16 inchers as opposed to the later 17s. I think its because of this that im limited to 130. And im at only 5500rpm at 130mph with 1000 more rpm to go before redline. I hit this limiter 7 times during this 4 hour long trip just to prove myself right and its always right on 130. And its not rev-limited. Does any of u have this problem?? Because i keep reading u guys taken it up to 140 and 144, etc.... If i wasnt going to get rid of this car in a month or 2, i would definitely figure out on how to disable this.

If i recall.. the Gen1 5th Gen SE's the ones that came with 16 inch rims had Speed Limiters.. probably due to the 16 inch RIms and sh!tty tires..

maybe the Gen2 5th Gen SE with 17 inch rims don't have limiters.. maybe you can swap the ECU

Maybe it is just 16inchers and auto's, because in my 5spd SE w/17's, I have gone well into the 130's before telling myself that well...naybe this is not such a good idea!

rev limiter

I suspect they put one in for two reasons. 1) liability in case you really hurt yourself with the car, and the more likely 2) make sure that you don't break any warranty parts by operating them outside of their range.

it's been really inconsistent on who has a limter and who doesn't...
even people with 5 speed GXEs have claimed that they didn't have a limiter...i did push my car all the way up to 140 and plus mph before...

if you want to get rid of your limiter, you can either get a ECU swap with another car that doesn't have a limter, or you can save yourself alot of time and trouble by buying an APEXi RSM.

one time i got cut off at 135mph for like 3 times in a row...but i did have 2 blown 02 sensors and as soon as i got that fixed, i pushed my car all the way up to 150 and plus..

What's the speed limiter on the 2K2's? Has anyone tested it?

I dunno, 130mph is already fast enough to kill people and break stuff.

I was to told only the GLE's were limited of cousre that was to 120mph so consider your self jucky you can tap 130mph.
But since your getting rid of the car; what do you plan to replace it with John.

I thought it was due to the different tire ratings between the 16"/17" tires, but that doesn't make sense for the manual vs. auto both with 17" rims having a different limiter.

Buy the Apexi RSM as already suggested. I've been over 140 and so far no limiter. If I hit a limiter and it has considerable more RPMs left, I'll be getting a RSM myself. I just like to know I can pull to whatever speed the car is drag limited by if I ever "needed" to. However, I don't think I'll be testing that soon, since I don't feel confident in the POTENZAS because they're NOT ZR rated newer tires.

it's most likely the tires...if you put H-rated tires without no speed limiter on a car like Maximas...oooo...that's quite something..

Very true. On an interstate you can get up to a buck ten without noticing; even then your barely catching up with the soccer moms and wreckless teens.

The limiters(those who have them) seem to be inconsistent with some hitting it a 125 and others at 138. So what does that say who knows.

not talking about the limiter; i mean why get rid of the car? according to BLaZin 2k MaX, a car that doesnt go over 125 isnt one worth having. makes you wonder how often he go goes over 125? i lost a good friend in high school... he rolled his car 5x and hit a telephone pole and died instantaneously. someone pulled out in front of him and he lost control trying to slow down.

im not one of those guys that cruises the interstate at 125+mph... there are better things to do.

I hope to catch some 3 digit numbers popping up on my speedo for a few minutes at a time.

yea i asked Danis(gold AT/4gen w/SC) and he mentioned u with a GXE can go 140+!! Maybe we should take a ride in my car and u can see how messed up having a 130 limiter is.

And no one outside the Maxima community takes our car's performance seriously.
I mean were talking BMW, Merc, and dare I say Porsche performance.
With a few bolt-on and such we could do some serious damage.
Not that I'd do anything like that.

Inconclusive???

Seems like everyone has a different result on this. SO, what the hell is going on here. Nissans finally have different characters?? Thats actually glad to see. I am positively 100% sure my limiter kicks in at EXACTLY 130mph at 5500rpm with 1000 rpm to go, because i hit it almost 10 times!! I was screaming in the car when the 5.0 and TL was passing me at 130+ whem my limiter held me back. Only then, do i feel i need to get that APEX thing, but in the past couple years i always drive way past the speed limit but never DOUBLE it like i did now......

A lot of guys have them as soon as I get the cash I'm buying one
It allows you to mess with the ecu and force it to let you go past to cars stock limiter, I believe, correct me if I'm off on my information.

It's just a guizmo that you install between the ECU and sensors, which "tricks" the ECU by modifying the signal to look like your actually not going as fast.

Supposedly, the 4th gens have a way to temporarily override the ECU speed limiter, but if you leave it that way for too long you get a CEL. An on/off switch is probably a way around this.

what is CEL? and how much do those things run about?
and is it only good for that reason to by pass the speed limiter?
or anyother function?
thanks

i believe it also gives(fairly accurate)0-60 times and G-force readings, stuff like that.like a G-tech but with more functions

hmmm

I dont advocate going over 100, but Nissan advertised the crap out of the 142 top speed. They would be in some doo-doo if you have a limiter (non-GXE). There were tons of print ads with the 142 topspeed.

WRONG DUDE. I had a 2000 maxima sunlit sand, hit 140 in 4th gear and was heading to 160 when i get into 5th gear. There was nothing stopping my car to hit 160, but i was affraid of getting caught. i had the stok 16" rims also...so what are you talkin ABOUT????? there is no limiter on the 5 speed SE's....where is that written? show it to me. even the car i have now i can hit 160...i climb up to 140 easy in 4th gear.

here is the one that i did the 140 with, but not with these rims tho, it had stock 16" at the time

What the...I've been 140+ in my 00 SE automatic. No Problem! The initial CAR & Driver test went past 140. Heck a New Altima gets real close to the same mark!
