Automatic Lights
Ok, I have a 2002 GLE with the HID Lights. I was reading the owners manual and it said, the HID lights have a shorter life if you turn them on and off a lot, so my question is, why do they turn on when i'm under a bridge or somehting for like 2 seconds. Can I reprogram the computer so that they don't turn on for about 20 seconds or so, my 00 GXE didn't turn its lights on for about 20 seconds. Can anyone help???

true, frequent on/offs do shorten bulb life. the same is true for fluorescent bulbs in houses and offices. but it's not a noticable difference. we're not talking 50% here or anything. they might last 3-5% less than normal. so only 22 months instead of 2 years, or whatever. worth it, i'd say, for the kick-*** look of those hid's blazing out of the shadows.
technically, the same is true for computers, stereos, all light bulbs, electric motors, you name it. the initial surge of power at turn-on time damages the wires and circuits little by little each time it happens. but if we never turned things off, we'd all be like, well, las vegas.
although, if i had hid's, they'd be on all the time.
