Trunk Sound
Trunk Sound
Has anyone else noticed the very "cheap" hollow sound when they close their trunk. I have a 2002se and I'm shocked when I close the trunk and hear a "clank!" sound. All of the other doors feel and sound solid, but the trunk sounds horrible. It makes me feel like the trunk area is made out of recycled Budweiser cans. Is it something with my car, or are they all like that?

I agree completely! The trunk sounds absolutely cheap, especially when compared to the nice *thunk* of the doors. I have isolated the license plate and frame and it continues. I asked this question a while ago and got no useful responses.
Mine doesnt do that, I know one thing that should be standard is that trunk liner so you the see the metal part of the trunk. Ashame that a car costing this much doesnt have that standard.

hahaa... yes, i noticed that as well. if you look at 4th gen maximas, they have a nice carpetting material there which we lost (i have no idea why...). my friend w/the 4th gen said maybe i can get a hold of the 4th gen trunk liner and clip it onto mine with a good amount of Dynamat underneath. heck, i was thinking of dynamatting my car anyways, so this would probably be the easiest part to do. have phun.
trunk
I believe this issue came up previously. Those 5th gens with the Meridian edition include a trunk liner (for sound) and possibly better carpeting (although that was not expressed in the previous discussion).
I have the Meridian option and I agree the sound is not as strong as when closing one of the doors. I thought this was primarily due to the seal. Closing the doors clearly shows a good seal, whereas that's not really necessary with the trunk.
What I object to with my trunk are:
1) the rattle that the license plate/frame makes when closing,
2) the spring (tensioner) for the trunk doesn't adequately work when you have the spoiler (it should be stronger).

Re: Trunk Sound
I have 2 12' in my trunk and the whole trunk rattles like crazy. The worst part is the license plate, I tried 10 dirrerent things to make it stop and it only helped a lil. I even bought that 2 sided isolating tape and sealed the whole back of my license plate but it still rattles. I give up

I also dynamatted the trunk and put the carpeting and it sounds completely different.
The 2k3 Max has a carpeted truck mat as a factory installed option but you can order the part seperately. Cost is about $41 dealer invoice or about $59 retail. It is like one big floor mat for your trunk but a little heavier with the maxima logo on it. Comes in three colors and fits 2k+.
I asked for one when I bought my 2k3 SE and not only does it look good but cuts down on the noise level overall from the trunk area. Dealers may have to look hard to find the part number as it is new for 2003.

Too man tickets u know
I Agree. I just Dynamatted the entire trunk of my 2001 SE. Sounds much more solid. Just one word of advice. Use Dynamat extreme onthe trunk lid. not the original. The extreme is much easier to install, and sounds much better. I also chose to use that "Expandafoam" junk in the ridges in the trunk lid. I was told that with big stereos, its the outer sheetmetal that vibrates. Since you can't get to the outer metal in the trunk lid in some spots, fill those strengthening channels with expandafoam. Careful don't use too much, and don't get it on the carpeting. If you're Dynamatting, then the carpet should already be out. Let me know how it goes!
I have had two Maximas. On both the trunk closing sounds like the tinny sound of an am station on a 1960 transistor radio. Myriend has a 1997 Volvo which has a trunk that has a solid thunk. It has nomore carpeting than the Max, but the lid is better weighted.
the maxima has a crap sound to the trunk, its a dumb thing to notice, but as a fanantic, i guess we all notive
anyways, i have noticed that my civic has a better, solid feeling sound than the maxima, but just like the maxima, the civic has that liscense plate rattle, i think its because there are only 2 screws used instead of 4.
and those hinges for the trunk lid is one of the first "signs of cheapness" that i noticed on the max. we had a 1992 mazda 929, and it had hydraulic lifts for the lid, which gave the trunk more space.
still a great car though.
