Tortured and abused my auto tranny today

I was driving to work this morning on this ramp to another freeway. There was a slow buick in front of me so I decided to pass him once I got on the freeway. Once I switched lane to pass him, this Accord was coming from behind in a very high speed, I quickly turned off my OD and kick it back to 3rd. Engine goes to 5k and keep going up. That accord didnt want to slow down at all and tried to tailgate me. The driver gave me a middle finger (WTF?!!?!) when there was a 2-car lenght between us and finally I was pulling away from him. engine was running @ 6.2k.

Next thing, I want to turn the OD off and just I put my hand on the shift.....IT SHIFT TO THE 4TH RIGHT BEFORE THE REDLINE! yes...with OD off.....Does the auto tranny have some kind of preventive mechanism to overwrite the OD-off and shift to 4th??

Got off the freeway and I was playing around with manual shifting the auto (I've been playing around with this recently) and accidentally moved the shifter to between 2nd and D while it was running 6200 at first. All the sudden I heard this this "clunk" sound and my car jerked.....then it shift, like the tranny slipped. I got scared and put it back to D....swear that I will never mess with it again.

now...manual shifting an auto.....this is what I noticed.
I can command her to shift at the rpm that I want....but seems it takes a bit time to shift a gear this way, like the car needs time to respond to your command. It doesnt make any sound or anything. When I let the computer to shift, it does it faster and smoother. Does this happen to everybody?

thx....

yeah, this is an automatic transmission, you will have a delay trying to shift manually. If you like to shift get a manual

It's relative and just a play on your psyche. If you manually shift it you can distinguish between the time you moved the shifter up to the point the transmission actually does something.

If you let it be, you don't actually know when the ECU is telling your tranny to shift thus you won't notice the gap between telling it what to do and doing what it was told to do.

ive experienced the same thing in a couple of conditions. i started running a 3000gt non turbo and i dropped it into 2 too high and it slammed into the rev limiter and it bucked real hard. i threw it back into d and punched it so he didnt get ahead but i must have done it too fast because it hit again. taking off the line i swear i get away quicker shifting than just keeping it in D. but from now on, im real careful to when i put it down after im already going. i put on a tranny cooler and synthetic trans oil just because how hard i can be on it and how easy i have heard it fail.

or prob. it is the time for the signal of shifting to be transfered to the ECU......I believe the time that you step on the gas, your ECU already calculated when to shift. That's prob. why I felt leaving it @ D is faster shifting than do it manually.

I thought u said "nissan do build the greatest tranny" as a joke

vb mod might be my next project......still not sure about wheather it's prolonging the life of tranny or it might cause some damage since we add a lot of stress to the tranny....still lurking, still reading.

One of my question in the beginnig...

Does our auto tranny have some kind of protective step to overwrite the OD-off and shift to the 4th? in case some people forgot to turn on OD?

or anybody wants to find out?

Do you have a pre-2k2? I'm not exactly sure if it's possible, but on mine the shifting is more precise/crisper/more responsive if i just leave it in 3. And as far as i've been able to test i've managed to go all the way to a notch below redline w/o the transmission upshifting to 4th.

first of all, there is a rev limiter, when it will hit it in 3rd, the car won't pass it. then you know you need to move it to 4th

the other thing, redlineing 3rd in auto is around 125. why would a company do that when they know that 95% of all people never hit that speed, and if they do, they will probaly know to shift it to 4th

yes, I have a 2k GLE. and I never had the tranny fixed under TSB since I havent noticed any slip.....maybe it does a little bit, but wont be able to tell if I am not running quarters.

the car shift to the 4th before I could push the OD button.....I am pretty sure becaues when I hit the OD button again, nothing happens and she didnt slow down at all.

my question was.....as a safety concern, did the company make an overwrite feature to shift the gear to 4th while OD is off?

Wanted to try manually shifting today but wasn't quite sure if your supposed to let go of the accelarator when changing gears or keep holding it down and switching...Someone pls. clear this up for me..

Thankz in advance..

i wouldnt let off when you downshift espically when you going a decent speed. its just going to nose dive and start slowing down. i do what [maxi-overdose] and let off a little but you keep the momentum going if you keep your foot on. just play around with it. start off the line and see what speed or RPM you are comfortable with for shifting.

The best part of driving my auto tranny '02 Max and what I look forward to every morning is merging onto the interstate from the on ramp, dropping it down to 3rd, squeeze the gas pedal and watching everybody disappear in my rearview mirror.

Yeah, the Max has good passing power and response. I tend to do that too when I'm merging onto the freeway or passing some slow drivers.

As for the topic on hand, I hit redline once in 2nd gear during my very first run-in with someone who wanted their a$$ handed to them. I guess I got too excited and forgot I put it in 2nd. It didn't shift automatically, just bounced off redline for a second til I put it in 3rd. It's weird how when you guys downshifted into a lower a gear and it still let you even though it would be beyond redline in the lower gear. I thought even those manumatics wouldn't let you do that.

Question for you VB Mod people: Can your car chirp going into 2nd? Most people say they notice the quicker shifts, but it doesn't show on timeslips. Just wondering if it's worth it.

Re: Re: Autoright

I don't have one, but yes i can chirp 2nd depending on conditions. AFAIK, the VB mod - based on the #'s - don't help much as far as performance goes but it does help lengthen your transmission's life.
