Slippery tranny? (kinda long but looking for input)
Okay, I've posted this before, but it eats me so I gotta try again and see if I should take it in or not. Here's the scenario. I leave work everyday and need to take a right hand turn from a dead stop into traffic and it's always busy and I usually have the A/C on. There's a pothole so I have to ease my way onto the road at <5mph and then stomp on it to get going and avoid getting rear ended. Almost every time I do this I get out onto the road and I'm doing like 3mph while turning and I punch it and my 00 SE Auto 37K sits and thinks for a second and then drops to what must be 1st (feels like passing gear) and then goes like hell. If I never get over like 5mph, shouldn't I just be in 1st?? Why does it have to think about what to do? I know it's not a stick, but shouldn't the power be right there? Can I be in 2nd already at 5mph? I don't know if it qualifies as a slip, but it will do it other times when going around a corner and then hit it. It seems more noticeable with the A/C on for some reason. If one didn't come to expect it you could almost rear end somebody because it's like nothing, duh, split second of "what the F?" and then take off to beat hell. I did bring it in a long long time ago for the so called "TCM" TSB (even though it wasn't a soft shift from 1 to 2 on full throttle, I conned them into it), and it's supposedly done, but how does one verify? I wouldn't know where to begin to look. If I shift manually it does not do this. Is there anything at all I can do? Can you program more aggressive shift points into these things? I REALLY wish I would've got the stick but it's too late now and I don't want to sell and lose the depreciation $. I'd spend a grand getting one of those kits that does the torque converter lockout shift yourself thing (at least I think I read something about one of those being available) before I sold the car. I've been way to meticulous with wax, tint, etc to let her go. Please help!! I'll even mod if needed. Thanks for your time.

that's not a slip, but its some sort of hesitation that the ECU has. like we all know , Nissan has some major crap automatic tranny. it shifts into 2nd gear when you pass 10mph, i have never saw a car do that. it moves into 3rd gear right when you pass 25mph. its just soo stupid. nothing really to do about it, maybe get the TSB done to the tranny, it might do a little bit. but i guess you just have to live with it

when u r rolling at very low speed....u sure to be on the 1st gear. For a manual, it just one smooth procedure...but for an auto, ECU has to calculate when to shift after u step on the pedal, it might cause some delay.
few of the 2k2 auto maxima have this problem where they floor the gas pedal @ stop and takes a split second for the car to move. One've diagnostic to be the engine mount problem where the engine was not secure and some power was lost. I think they tested it by torque braking the car and then found out the engine shakes really bad at 2200 rpm.
a tranny slip would be something that causes a long noticible time to shift the gear....so when u floor it, the engine revs up and stays at certain point...then the entire car has no power because it is shifting...then finally pops into the next gear and the car moves on. it's very jerky and noticible.

YES! That's exactly my point. What the H*LL is this thing doing shifting to 2nd gear at such a slow speed??? Mine does it at like 5mph at times. That's gotta be it, it's already in 2nd and then I hammer it and the tranny's stuck (or ECU) in a state of confusion going "you mean you want me to haul ***?" and then drops down to 1st. I know on the old muscle cars you could adjust the points at where a transmission would shift, or at least I think you could. Is there a way to program an ECU (mind you I'm very non-technical with cars) to not shift to 2nd until at least 20mph is reached? Kind of like race tuning or something? I'm figuring I'll just have to live with it and vent one more time saying I HATE THAT, I HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS! Ok, I'm done. Next time it's a manual, no question.

When you want to control the shift points yourself, use the shift lever (manually shift your automatic). Hold the car in first until you want to go to second (after the hole in the road). That you don't get the down shift. Very simple and controlable.

I have a similiar right turn out of my housing tract. My auto doesn't hesitate in downshifting but it has a longer 1-2 upshift in the morning when it is not up to operating temp. But I've noticed when I make the same turn after the car has been driven awhile and give it the same throttle, the 1-2 shift is instant. I think it as to do with the trans fluid temperature.

there is a TSB on this problem...check the TSB inside thread on the top of the first page.
