There are literally dozens of posts on this subject, reggie. Do a search under tires and prepare yourself for the onslaught.
To make a long story short, 235/45R17 tires are not in-spec on the OEM 7"-wide rims. However, a number of people have run them on the OEM rims without a problem.
I don't care what you decide to do. But I would recommend that you do your homework before you make up your mind.

What An Excellent Question....
I think thin has been dicussed before, but just can't recall. (That smell is sarcasm).
Reggie my man, you are about to learn about the SEARCH button.
But, I will answer your question. Can you put 234/45/17s on your 17x7 rim? Sure. Is it a very bright thing to do? Uh, no. No, it is not.
I am guessing that you are asking because of the limited availability of 225/50/17. Try the 235/50/17. This will keep you in spec on your 17x7s. You may or may not find a bigger selection.
Beware. As I type this, there are several .org members licking their chops and getting to pounce on you.
Psst. In the future, use the search button. It'll save you from the abuse you are about to recieve.
Oh, and welcome.

i decided to go with some michelin pilots a/s. i got them in 235/50/17 which stays in the spec, will make more contact and take up some of that wonderful wheel gap. they are a pretty penny but if you can fork it over, go for it. another good one to look at in that size is the pirelli p6000. check them both out over at tirerack

I currently have the Potenza RE730 and I love them. I haven't tried an enormous amount of tires so I can't compare them to much to other brands. I just know I love them.
