All of us max owners should be worried about the new accords. The '03 accord coupe with the 6-speed will probably dip into the high 5's in 0-60 and low 14's in the quarter mile. With the huge after market support available for hondas, it'll be one helluva of challenge to regularly kill hondas like we're all so used to doing!

Can you get the sedan with the 6spd stick? Or just the coupe? Maybe the Maxima still rules the sedan world?

Oh god, my max won't be the fastest? Who cares, why does everyone cry about speed all the time anyway? The Max looks tons smoother, isn't a Honda, and just plain kicks ****.

According to Motor Trend, the new Accord V6 has something like 213TQ...something like that.

I don't think the Accord will be a threat to the Maxima because lets just be honest finally Honda has design a car that the general public and even a large portion of honda fans find plain ulgy.

Honda fans said the Max might be fast but its ulgy but the interior is nice now they will be saying the same about accord it's ulgy, but its fast and the interior is nice. If the Max gets beat by an accord just say to yourself it's ulgy as sin and Keep rolling!

whoa! that is one fugly car! yuck! the only pic in that series that isn't ugly is the one under the hood!

my sister has a '97 accord, and with some more power (translation: mods) it's actually a really nice car. ever since the 2k redesign, however, they look more like a ford focus every year (that's not a good thing). too bad, cause they're good engineers, their cars all always tight and well-built. and of course the great mods industry... too bad they're just getting fuglier by the day.

not gonna trade in the max anytime soon...

YES... Definitely a Maxima Threat.....

Ok, I understand the incredible bias towards the Max on this board. But let's get realistic. Honda has, and will continue to clean up when it comes to sales. Now, not only do you have the legendary reliability, and build quality of the Honda, but you actually have some power to go along with it.

Hmmm.

Ugly? Sure. Not the greatest looking car. Why did they change?

Toyota Camry.

Who didn't see that coming?

Am I the only one that thinks it looks pretty good. Front end seems a little odd. Rear seems more europian. Overall there are a lot of Nissan styling cues integrated into this car. Altima headlights, Maxima rear bumper, Maxima center console, and Maxima chrome windows trim.

Accord is a great car

I'll give my props to Honda. I think the Accord is a great car, and the '03 model may be fugly, but its interior design, overall build quality, reliability and new-found power make it a top contender. There's no argument about it, just look at the sales figures, and watch them climb next year.

But I'd rather walk into a parking lot and not have to use my key fob to find my car that looks like every other car parked next to it. The main reason I chose the Maxima is its uniqueness and exclusivity. Let all the practical, boring, conservative sheep buy their Accords. The bottom line is... Maxima owners are intelligent, passionate, and distinctive. We are just as practical about our choice of vehicle as any Honda owner. We just don't choose to follow. We are leaders.

I'm done.

Peace.

Honda's sleeper

Honda's lack of low-end torque is probably made up for with increased torque multiplication from a shorter (higher numerical) overall first gearing. Also Honda did their homework with setting the appropriate rev limit for the given powerband "thickness" and gear ratio spread with a lofty 6750 rpm limit compared to the peak power rpm. Nissan's '00 and '00 Maxima had a 222 peak hp engine but their redline/rev cut was at 6500 rpm and peak power was made a 6400 rpm. Since one couldn't use the real meat of the powerband, many people were falsely wondering about Nissan's output claims when in fact the issue was full utilization of the powerband. Nissan fixed this with their '02+ Maximas with the same rev limit but peak power made at 5800rpm. Hence the gains on '02 Maximas were a combination of closer gear spread (manual models), higher output everywhere, and the ability to more fully utilize the available powerband.

I agree with some here that the sedan is really mild and way off the Altima/Maxima mark in sportiness and worse than the newer Camrys in elegance. However, for the first few months, I think the plain look of the Accord can really give these sleeper-loving types some real pocket income by winning a lot of street race bets to unsuspecting owners of other cars.

it looks...

like they swiped the **** of a saab and the front end of a ford focus and glued them to an accord cockpit for one fugly sedan....

as for the coupe.... ford focus front + mercedes benz slk rear= one of the fugliest coupes to roll on this planet... what is up with honda?

The first three gears are actually about the same as the old 4AT gearing. What they did was change the final drive ratio from 4.20 to 4.428 so yes, you'll get a little more torque multiplication. However, that still won't make up for the lack of low-end torque. The only thing that will help with that is better cams (Acura's have them, Honda's don't), a variable intake manifold (Acura's have them, Honda's don't), or more displacement (Acura and Nissan have it, Honda doesn't). There's no way around it on the 5AT models. The 6spd Coupes will at least be able to rev up the engine massively on hard launches so it won't be as much of a problem.

But with the automatic, off the line, the car is going to get owned by Altima's and Maxima's. From a roll it'll be much more dangerous...
