Had trouble pulling from 93 Altima???

Had trouble pulling from 93 Altima???

Me and my friend agree to race hes like 250 lbs, me and the guy in my car total a bit over 300. He's a 93 GXE auto I'm 00 GLE auto of course. From 0-30 I had trouble pulling away...we were side by side the whole way, I only started to pull away past 50. Does this have to do with the intake taking away your low end or something? I also had trouble pulling from my friends 97 Jeep Cherokee Laredo that night...only one car ahead by 60 mph on both races...

how did ur friend launch? if he torque braked a bit...he might have a chance to stay with u side by side.

We both floored it from the start...apparently he wasn't even flooring it completely. He needed a tune-up too. My tires slipped a bit but not enough to have him by my side for so long I think...

Its exactly what I was thinking...I got so disappointed after. The car should be running fine and he's completely stock..

Well, last night I had a Honda Odyssey next to me and I had to get in front of the van to get on the highway as I was in the wrong lane at the light. I gave it about 3/4 throttle not expecting any trouble and the damn van PASSED me. WTF! I don't think our cars are as fast as we sometimes think they are.

the odyssey probably had the newer 240 hp engine. im sure its sluggish from a stop but from a roll it would be pretty quick. about the altima, i had a 95 altima when i got my max. i sold it to a friend so i had both at one time. it was an auto with k&n drop in and good maintenance and i spanked it pretty good with 2k miles on my max and no mods except the k&n drop in. i would check his car then if nothing check yours.

im bonse stock 2k2 se auto, and i raced a 95 saturn coupe auto and at 40 i was only half a car length ahead. people say the max has such pull in 1st gear. i dont think so. once you hit 45 your gone, but thats 45. i wanna smoke people off the line. maybe its too much power for fwd.

Yea you should have no problem with that car at all. A turbo 95 alti couldnt pull on me when all I had was my frankencar.

That's what I'm wondering too. My friend had a '94 Altima('til he totaled it last Monday), and I beat him, even when he used the signal to start. He used his own hand signals first, and I took him by 4 cars to 90, and then he used three honks and I beat him by 2 cars to 80.

Oh yeah, and I'm a '99 automagic with 30hp less than you 5th gen guys!

My theory about our auto max: off the start on a red light if you dont rev a all and you punch it, there is a lag time, this is probably the weak spot of our engine, every time I punch it form idle it take a fraction of a second of a half second before the engine pick up some power, kinda weird but as soon as your are started then it rev pretty fast and pick up quickly, my car is in perfect condition but I learn that the max is more efficient on the highway from a roll unless you have boost. Even with intake and Y-pipe there is a lack of low end power, that's why I'm custom building a Eaton MP62 S/C for my max, I no longer want to be embarass and see a Cavalier Z24 taking the leads from me on a red light.

Yup, I agree completely. From a roll is where a I prefer to race if I do. 40 - 50 starting is where it feels like it pulls the hardest.

its not our cars fault we(auto) suck off the line. its the transmissions fault. our first gear is real long, and goes up to 45 mph at which point our engine starts to kick ***. get in a stick max and the lack of low end is gone, due to the gearing and ability to launch at any RPM. i know how it feels off the line in an auto .

but torque braking helps a great deal. heres an example: i raced a friend in a 92 accord stick w/o TBing, and he got me off the line by about a car, and i only started to catch up around 60 or 70. then i TBed again, and I actually got him off the line by a few feet. i continued to whoop his ****.

or just do a neutral drop from 6000 rpm

Something would still be wrong if a 10 sec 0-60 Altima is within one carlength of me (about 1/10 second I think) when I reach 60. But I definetly feel a lack in low end which I thoguht Maximas have...complete opposite from my friends 2000 Silverado which was all low end. I'll try the torque braking...it still sucks that my Max has trouble pulling from an Altima.

I didn't torque brake...

To get my best start, I would hold the brake with my left foot like I was torque braking, but keep my right foot over(not on) the gas. When it is time to start, I lift off the brake and hit the gas at the same time. Usually this keeps me from spinning my wheels, too.
The problem I had with just flooring it from a start was the lag. I think the reason for this is that the car is already rolling just a bit, and the tranny computer wants to downshift, but there isn't a lower gear to downshift to. My starting method keeps the car from rolling at all, so that it's a clean start.
Try it, the only thing is that it takes time to get your pedal timing right. I did it once last fall, but messed up and lost to a Civic!

I totally agree. Second is a sweet gear! But, does anyone think that the shift from Second to Third is slow and sluggish. Example: when I am rolling at about 20 and floor it, the car will scoot up until near redline, then when it shifts to third (still floored) the shift seems to burn too much clutch and the pull in third seems kinda sluggish at first. This may just be that 2nd pulls so hard that third seems sluggish when engaged??
