Chrome the Rims

Alright guys couple things here, first off who thinks its a good Idea to Chrome the 17' SE Rims? Not a heavy chrome but like the AE rims or some of the 2002 - 03 Rims. And Where can i get it done?

The AE wheels are almost a high polish wheel. You can get that high polish done by anyone who does polishing.

The AE rims aren't chrome, they're polished.

IMHO, chroming the OEM rims is a waste of money. You'll still end up with 7.0"-wide rims and a severely restricted tire selection if you decide to remain in spec. I'd recommend you sell your OEM rims and purchase a set of aftermarket rims that are at least 7.5" wide. If you don't know why I make that recommendation, go to the Frequently Asked Questions thread at the top of the 5th Gen Forum and search out the posts related to tires and rims.

I got my '02 SE rims chromed. They look great because they are chrome but dont take away from the stock look of the car!

Im not sure all the BS y2k whatever is talking about, maybe its true if you want new or better tires, I dont know, but I'd recomend it if you like chrome (like me) and wanna keep a stock look.

I got them done in Cali, they sent me the rims (already chromed) and then I sent my stock rims back to them in the same box. They charge you for double for the rims and when you send back the originals they refund the difference back to your credit card. I forget them name of the company but I will post their web site when I go home and check it.

Pmm3erd, y2kse was pointing to the fact that there is a limited selection (note: VERY) for replacement tires on our stock profiles. If one were to spend on the wheels might as well get a rim that will make tire choices down the line a lot easier and less of a hassle.

On a slightly different note, given the OEM rims are pretty heavy already, wouldn't chroming it make the rim heavier than just getting aftermarket chromed rims instead?

That's true. You don't have a clue, Pmm3rd. Let's just hope you never have to find out what I'm talking about the hard way.

Whatever. That doesnt make sense to me? How come you just cant put the same tires back on once they wear out (or a similar brand).

Lets say the rims arn't chromed, you mean to tell me there is a limited selection of tires for our car ('02 SE). I dont know much about cars, and I didnt mean to be offensive but that just doesnt make any sense.

PS. Im waiting for a grill and valance to come in from JMS Custom Grills, Inc. Once I get that on I will take new pics of the car with the grills and rims and post them.

You pretty much got that right. Not to mention, if one were to shell out for tires might as well get something that performs well on both wet and dry conditions.

If you'll notice, a lot of people don't like the Potenza's that much. Me included.

As soundmike points out, most people don't like the stock Potenza RE-92s. But when they try to replace them, they discover a very limited selection in the OEM tire size of 225/50R17. Check it out for yourself. Go to a site like Tirerack.com and see how many high performance tires you can find in 225/50R17. Then do another search only this time, look for 235/45R17s instead. You'll see what I'm talking about. Problem is, 235/45R17 tires don't fit our stock 7.0"-wide rims properly. You need at least a 7.5"-wide rim to run that tire size. Nevertheless, a number of people have opted to purchase 235/45R17s and run them on their OEM rims in violation of tire manufacturer specifications and against the manufacturers' advice.

Now perhaps you're beginning to understand why I recommend that you purchase 7.5"-wide rims rather than chrome your 7.0"-wide rims.

Ok, so the verdict on this discussion is this:
If you want your rims chromed and you dont mind having the "Potenza type" tires on their for life than go for it.

Otherwise, you may need to opt for something a little different.

(Me personally, Im not really a performance guy, but would rather have something that I think looks good so the chromed stock wheels with those tires are fine wit me).

But of course, your personal choice is always the last word

Just looking out for fellow .Org'ers. IMHO, if i had the funds for it i'd swap out the RE-92's in an instant. I've gone through several rainy days with it and w/o TCS i have to be very careful or risk hydroplaning/skidding.

I did not buy them cause I have the Titanium package, which comes with the polished wheels. Couldn't see spending the money for the same size rim which does not look that much better.

Those polished rims are really cool too! Ive seen them on the Maximas and on a few IS 300s and they are sharp.

If I had those, I probably wouldnt get them either....
