MPG Question.....
MPG Question.....
I have a 2K3 Max SE auto with 1500 miles on it. The computer is saying I am getting about 24 MPG When you do out the math for a 18.5 gallon tank I should be getting about 444 miles to a tank when infact I am only getting about 350. Is this normal on a new car? Oh yeah I only put 93 in it also....

Re: MPG Question.....
you can also search around here and find lots of info about this. I have a 2k2 and have gone 450+ on a tank... someone else went close to 500 I believe.
while searching you're going to find a lot about the mph computer being about 3-4 mpg off.

Re: MPG Question.....
My computer typically reads about 3 mpg's more than actual, like most everyone else. There's nothing you can do.
When I first got my 2k2, I couldn't bust 300 miles on a tank for anything! (I'm in Houston w/ a lot of traffic) Now at about 12k, I hit 300-350 even while driving a little more agressively. There's other's gettin a lot more, but for a lot of traffic driving, I'm satisfied. It took every bit of 10k miles to get this. I also have noticed that every time I punch it in first (auto), I catch a nice second-gear chirp. It didn't do this until about 10k either. I've been informed though, that a lot of auto's do this, so it's not a real big deal. But there's obviously SOME truth to the Max needing closer to 10k to fully break-in. IMO.

I've noticed that as I've been breaking in my 2K2, the mpg has improved. I'm getting almost 400 miles, almost all highway. The mpg calculator is waaay off though. It's way too optimistic, by about 4 mpg!
i can't even break 300 in city traffic...it sucks, i usually get around 17 or 18mpg. only one time i had all highway and i got 23mpg ...330 a tank. is something wrong with my car? or its just the way i drive, 80% of my driving is normal , over here and there i give it a punch but most of the time i drive really nice and easy on the gas pedal

This was true of the 2K stick even at 45,000 miles, so break-in didn't do much in that respect. The 2K2 has only 4K on it, and I'm not expecting any big increase in MPG over time.
This is completely unlike my 93 stick, which routinely gave 23MPG mixed driving and 27-28 highway...
all of this according to gas receipts, not the 2K2 trip computer (which is 2-4MPG too generous)

Anyone here know if this is something I should worry about?

Thanks!
As has been discussed in several threads
that can easily be found usng SEARCH...
mileage is very dependent upon:
- quality of fuel used
- additives in the fuel (often vary from one part of the country to another as well as seasonal additives)
- driving style
AND ONE OF THE MOST OFTEN OVERLOOKED
- length of individual trips...the engine runs rich (more fuel used) for short trips until it reaches full operating temp

I, too, have the same problem... I have a 2k2 SE auto and my mpg was in the neighborhood of 24mpg during the break-in. But now, about 1800miles later, it's down to 18mpg. My driving style hasn't changed much...
Anyone here know if this is something I should worry about?

what i started doing was manually shifting....when i want to accelerate from 25-40 lets say, you press the gas and if the car won't shift into 2nd gear you are already 50% gas, so i put it in 2nd, and press 20% gas....just like a stick. i think it helps
what do you guys think?

Also, i don't think 2nd gear is necessary (depending on the situation). You can achieve the same effect while in 3rd.

It's horrible and since I have to put the high $ stuff in the car (no gas debates please - that's just my piece of mind preference), it is killing me. I have asked the service dept and they say nothing's wrong, but since I can't hit 20 mpg, I really think something is wrong with my car. Any thoughts?
