I have 235/45ZR17 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires on my '02 SE (stock 17" wheels). I have 3500 miles on them so far without a problem. I had a '00 SE w/ stock 17's before this car and put 40K miles on a set of Pilot Sport XGT-Z4's in that same size. Stock springs on both though...
This topic has been discussed many times and many people will go on and on about how these tires are the wrong size and do not meet manufacturer recommendations. If you want your speedo to be as accurate as possible, this is the correct size.
You should be fine with those tires.

225/50/17 vs. 235/45/17
When your speedo says 60 mph, you are actually travelling 58.8 mph.
235/45 is not within spec or our stock 17" rims.

235 width on 7" rim = unnecessary safety risk

Do you mean a 225 55 17?

225 50 17: 25.9"
235 50 17: 26.3"
235 45 17: 25.3"
Wait, I thought I understood this whole thing but apparently not.
The 235 50 17 is the widest out of these and it falls within spec, while the 235 45 17 is the narrowest and it does not?

It's called sidewall flexion, folks. The greater the aspect ratio, the taller the tire and the more flex in the sidewall. Hence a 235/50R17 will fit on a 7.0" wide rim while a 235/45R17 will not because the sidewall on a 235/50 can flex more than the sidewall on a 235/45. Capiche?

As an aside, we already confirmed that the Pilot Sport A/S tires are narrower than other tires of the same size. This should mean they fit on the 7" wide stock rims without a problem (and they do).

No really sure why it won't fit. I got 40K miles on my last set on my '00 SE and turned them in at the end of my lease.

If you're suggesting that Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires in size 235/45R17 will fit properly on 7.0"-wide rims, I'll issue the same challenge to you as I've issued to everyone else who has tried to substitute their misguided opinion for fact. Get Michelin (or any other manufacturer of 235/45R17 tires for that matter) to agree in writing that they fit. Until then, you're just another individual with more ***** then brains as far as I'm concerned.
Check it out, folks. This is a striking example of someone making assumptions about a subject they obviously know nothing about. And it's also why you should NEVER trust anyone's word about tire specifications other than the MANUFACTURER of the tire. Whether a tire fits properly on a rim of a given width isn't just a matter of how wide the tire is, it's also a matter of how much flex there is in the tire's sidewalls. Sidewall flex is a function of the tire's aspect ratio. And I defy anyone to measure sidewall flex with a ruler.
Tire manufacturers do not set specifications arbitrarily. But that's precisely what you've done, carguyrob. Do you and others of your persuasion seriously expect us to believe that you know more about tire safety than the Tire and Rim Association of America and every tire manufacturer in the world?

I had to, asu174. I keep thinking that people are actually going to get the message around here. And I truly believe most have. But there will always be people like carguyrob who continue to deny the truth even when it's staring them right in the face. Call me silly, but I've taken it upon myself to present the truth to those people whenever they challenge it.

Since you didn't have the typical 4 pages of blasphemers, I figured you didn't need backup, but was in the wings just in case...
