damn service engine light

alrite, once again the service engine soon light came on in my car, and i tightened the cap, and still is on after i drove it a few times. it shuldnt go off because of the cap, because the last time i filled it up was 2 weeks ago, unless 4 some reason the cap just loosens for some reason, but i did tighten it, what else does the service engine light mean?

service engine light can indicate a wide range of problems.... you need to get the code read. If you are under warranty and have no mods, a dealer will help you out no questions asked....

find a mechaninc with an OBD-II reader/scanner or go to a Auto Zone... they can read the code for you as well.

Do you want the service light to go out???? If so, do what I did the other day.Loosen the neg. batt cable and leave off for an hour. Then put back on and tighten, light should be gone. You will have to reset your clock, and your trip meter will register 0 miles.

Slick Rick, disconnecting the battery will cause your computer to lose the information in storage unless it is a hard code. I have a 2000SE and my check engine light went on and I disconnected the battery to reset the light. When I took it to the dealer, they said that the diagnosis came up clear and no problem was detected. However the light came back on several weeks later and when I took it in to the dealer, the code came up as a faulty cat. since my cats were fine they told me that I need a somputer software upgrade which they did under the 60k engine warranty. Imagine that, all along I thought it had somehting to do with several aftermarket intakes. Car is back to stock and I may venture into modifications again.

well if i do the battery thing, will the problem still show up at the dealership? [/QUOTE]

I got this Service Engine Soon light on last week. Well I was not a happy camper , MY Grey Lustre 00 Maxima has 24000 miles on it and I just got it dealer serviced 2 week before. Anyway I took it to Autoland and checked the code it was the famous P0420. As a car under warrenty I took it to the dealer. The said that they upgraded the software on the ECM. So a bug in the software no harm, no fowl , no cost. /Colin
