I have owned an 89 LX 5.0 with full length headers and no cats, 3 ich pipes al the way back. Also a WS6 T/A with headers , no cats , and a 3 inch exhuast. I am the wrong person to ask. If you dont like sound leave your stock setup. ANY aftermarket exhaust will give you some sort of humm in overdrive.

I'd have to disagree with that statement, kloogy. The muffler is the key. You can install a full-bore custom exhaust including a Y-pipe, hi-flow catalytic convertor, no resonator and 2.5" piping. And as long as you keep your OEM rear section, you should not experience an unpleasant droning sound.

Try it, maxGTRvq35de. You'll like it.

Sorry man, that is why I put my stock muffler back on. I loved the way it looked, but that drone killed me.

Ahhh, the sweet silence of my Max is back!!

Isn't there a resonator behind the cat and before the muffler? Removing that is the source of the resonation, not the muffler. Put the stock unit back on, and the resonation will be all but gone.

You can leave the powertech muffler on, and will still sound better than stock...

I wouldn't call what I have now "silence". I'd call it more of a "purr" . . . except at WOT, of course.

That was NOT my experience, OhTwoAltimaSE. Installing a resonator helped. But I had to reinstall the OEM muffler before the sound of my exhaust became tolerable. And I doubt there are many people on this forum who have had more exhaust setups on their Maximas than I've had.

Nope. It didn't make sense to put a 2.25"-diameter resonator with crimped ends onto 2.5" piping. I installed a 2.5"-diameter Magnaflow resonator instead.

Yeah that sucks, I had to go back to the stock resonator on my Altima. Resonation was killing me.

Changing Tips

I was at Pep Boys this weekend getting some car care stuff and saw some nice looking tips: budd nose, with cf and polished. I'm actually thinking of getting 2.5" or 3" for my stock muffler, depending which one fits and looks better. I like the looks of after market mafflers, but their are too loud for my taste. I got Frankencar/JWT and sometimes it to loud too.

I'm gonna go with some tips too. I'll do other exhaust stuff like y-pipe, etc..., but keep the stock muffler.

Welcome to the Return to Stock Muffler Club

I was there too brother! Amen, too loud. I had a Greddy SP catback system on my I-30, lasted exactly 24 hours before I took it out.

You can give the resonator and muffler + silencer a try. But I'm not sure how the silencer works. Would a silencer increase backpressure? If it does, what's its advantage over the OEM muffler?

Its very simple. Just leave your exhaust stock. I beleive that 80 % of us that tinker with it, want a some increase in sound.

Ive got a 2001 Auto and I have been wondering about a couple things....ive been thinkin about going with a full 2 1/2 inch custom mandrel bent exhaust, high flow cat, either stillen or cattman y pipe, no resonator with the stock muffler....can someone tell me how this will sound? i want it to sound mean and throatier than it does now but i dont want it to be ALL THAT loud. and plus i wanna keep my stock appearance.
thanks
matt

You should be fine with that setup. If it's too loud for you after you get it installed, you can always add a resonator later.
